A 23-year-old man has been granted $90,000 bail after appearing in court charged with allegedly forging vehicle tint exemption documents.
Kavir Maharaj was given bail as he appeared before High Court Master Shabiki Cazabon yesterday. Maharaj was arrested after he was stopped at a roadblock in Curepe that was conducted by officers of the Licensing Authority led by Transport Commissioner Clive Clarke last Friday.
Maharaj was reportedly quizzed on whether he had permission for the tint on his station wagon and he produced a letter and a certificate that were purportedly issued by the Ministry of Works and Transport’s Transport Division.
Clarke and his colleagues initially believed that the documents were genuine but eventually impounded the vehicle and detained Maharaj after allegedly conducting further verification checks.
Maharaj, who was represented by Keron Ramkhalwhan, was slapped with two forgery charges and two for uttering a forged document.
He was not called upon to plead to the charges during the hearing.
As part of his bail conditions, Maharaj was ordered to report to his nearest police station on the last Saturday of every month until his case was determined.
A sufficiency hearing for the charges is expected to take place in October next year.
