Concerns raised by the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha about the demonetisation of the cotton 100 dollar bill is being described as “ill-conceived” based on “inconsistent factual allegations”.
This is according to a letter sent to the organization on Friday, on behalf of attorneys representing the Office of the Attorney General.
In its pre-action protocol letter issued this week to the AG Faris Al-Rawi and copied to the Minister of Finance Colm Imbert and the Central Bank Governor Alvin Hilaire, the SDMS stated the decision to enforce demonetisation over such a short period of time infringes on the constitutional rights of the citizenship.
However, in its response, the AG’s attorneys, Senior Counsel Fyard Hosein and Rishi Dass, denied acting unconstitutionally given that there has been sufficient planning on this issue.
In fact, the AG’s letter noted even on the backdrop of national security concerns, there has been consultation with both the Central Bank and the various commercial banks who “are all co-operating with the transition”.
This, the AG’s letter stated “is self-evident” since there has been no widespread panic and chaos at commercial banks.
Therefore as it stands now, the AG’s attorney concluded that there is no need for impugning of the amendment of the legislation.
