Police suspect arson in a fire that destroyed a house in Guayaguayare Village, Mayaro, on Friday.
A caretaker who lived in the house at Ferrier Circular was not there when the fire broke out around 9 am. A resident, who requested anonymity, said villagers panicked when they saw the house on fire since they did not know whether he was inside.
Seconds after the house went up in flames, three men and a woman were seen fleeing in a car. The resident said before the fire, the caretaker had a dispute with a woman.
“Right now the family is frightened and traumatised for their son’s life because this could have ended up in a different direction. The villagers were afraid that they had knocked him out in the home and he was in the fire because we were calling his phone and he was not answering, so there was a lot of panic in the community. “
She said they later learnt that the caretaker was at a relative’s home.
Mayaro Police are investigating.
