Homicide detectives are seeking an interview with a La Romain man whom relatives suspect in the murder of 22-year-old Shameia Went last Sunday.
An autopsy on Went at the Forensic Science Centre, St James, on Wednesday revealed that she had suffered multiple blunt force traumatic injuries to her body, confirming suspicions that someone beat her. Investigators confirmed that they had not yet located the suspect as of yesterday.
Police said someone dropped off Went at the San Fernando General Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department around 2.08 am on Sunday. The person returned to their vehicle and sped off without leaving any information. Went, who was unconscious and had several marks of violence on her body, also did not have any identification documents on her. Doctors at the hospital attempted to resuscitate her, but they were unsuccessful.
Relatives suspect that an ex-lover beat Went to death, as she previously suffered abuse and recently reconnected with him. They told Guardian Media that Went had previously gone to a safe house to escape a man they described as a narcissistic ex-lover. On June 21, she left the house and reconciled with him.
Went’s mother Sharon said her daughter had begun a relationship with the man in secret. After her family became aware of the relationship, Went moved in with him in La Romain. However, the abuse began within two months of them living together. Sharon said Went would call for help, but when relatives went with the police, she would tell officers that they had resolved the issue and refuse to press charges.
