One of three bandits who attempted to rob a Fyzabad bar yesterday was killed by a security guard.
The dead bandit, who was identified as David Phillip, of Point Fortin, was left by his accomplices to bleed out in the bushes near Picker’s Sports Bar, formerly Screamer’s Night Club, at the corner of Sanderson Avenue and Guapo Road, Butler Village.
According to police, the bandits walked into the bar around 3 pm and announced a holdup to the employees and a few patrons.
When they realised that the security officer on duty was armed, one of the bandits shot at the guard. The guard along with others scampered for safety. However, the guard returned fire, hitting Phillip.
His two accomplices ran out of the bar without stealing anything.
The guard, who was injured, was taken to the Siparia District Health Facility for treatment. He was reported to be in a stable condition.
Fyzabad police, led by Insp Seecharan and Cpl Gokool, responded and Phillip was found bleeding a short distance away. He had a deep gash on his foot and one of his shoes was missing. He eventually died on the spot.
A search was launched for the other two bandits, who escaped capture up to press time.
