American author Eric Jerome Dickey is back in Trinidad and Tobago to promote his new novel, An Accidental Affair. The New York Times bestselling author will appear at three locations of Nigel R Khan Bookseller next week to autograph books and meet with fans. This is Dickey's third trip to T&T, which has provided inspiration for one of his characters in his new book.
Dickey told the Guardian that in his book Pleasure, the main character, Nia Simone Bijo, is a Trinidadian who was born here but migrated to Atlanta, USA, as a child. "I am trying to use her again in another story, with a little more detail," he revealed, saying he captured many local nuances, such as being annoyed by questions about whether Trinidad is in Jamaica.
Dickey, who likes to write in the locations his books are based in, said he spends time observing people and reading the news to get a better grasp of the people he's writing about. Born in 1961, Dickey, a former computer programmer, has written 26 books to date, some of which have been based on the lives of African-Americans.
An Accidental Affair, which was published in April, is based on the lives of a Hollywood couple and involves current-day topics including viral porn videos, paparazzi and living in constant limelight. The book combines some of the elements from his other books that have made him famous. An Accidental Affair combines the romance from Friends and Lovers and Sister Sister, the rage, anger and mystery of the Gideon series, the intrigue of Thieves Paradise, the eroticism of Pleasure and the fast pace of Drive Me Crazy.
Dickey will be at the following locations next week:
July 23- Ellerslie Plaza, 11 am to 2 pm, West Mall, 3pm to 6 pm
July 24- Trincity Mall, 3 pm to 7 pm
July 25- Price Plaza, 11 am to 2 pm, Gulf City Mall, 3 pm to 6 pm.
