Sea Lots resident Cedric “Burkie” Burke has been released by the police, after spending almost two days in custody.
Police officers said he was being questioned in connection with their investigations into the murders of five fishermen and the disappearance of two others.
Burke was detained while at one of his two homes in Sea Lots at around 7 a.m. on Monday and was released at 11 am yesterday.
He was taken to the Freeport Police Station where he was questioned extensively about the fatal robbery of five Carli Bay fishermen.
On July 22nd the nation awoke to the news that seven fishermen were attacked while at sea and thrown overboard.
The bodies of five of the fishermen, identified as Hemraj Sooknan, 18, Shiva Ramdeo, 27, Brandon Kissoon, 21, Leslie De Boulet, Anand Rampersad, 39, were later recovered.
Last week 27-year-old Kareem Stanisclaus of Sea Lots appeared in court charged with the fishermen’s murder and the attempted murder of Brian Seemungal and Robbie Jaggernauth. He was also charged with robbery with violence along with Mya Bowrin, Iyola John and Shaquille Roberts.
Police say none of Burke’s belongings were seized during the exercise however, investigations into the incident continue.
This was the second time this year Burke was arrested.
He was taken into custody on Wednesday, July 3rd after he was found to be in possession of a large quantity of money which officers then said he could not account for.
The exact sum was estimated to be $100,000.
Burke was released days later, and the money returned to him.
