The cash strapped Chaguanas Borough Corporation decided to take matters into its own hands and partnered with a business in the area to fix the dilapidated infrastructure throughout the borough.
On Thursday machinery, materials and workers from the CBC were used to repair the roadway at Connector Road, Endeavour.
Trevor Ramdeen, the spokesman for the businessmen who assisted, said the business community along the Connector Road approached the CBC and pleaded for the potholes to be repaired. Ramdeen said they were told that the CBC does not have any money to purchase large quantities of materials to undertake repairs.
Ramdeen said the businessmen coughed up $18,000 to purchase materials and the borough chipped in with labour and transport.
Chaguanas Mayor Gopaul Boodhan said this is now a last resort.
“We have been receiving complaints about bad roads and other infrastructure and we are asking the business community to partner with us. These businessmen pay their taxes and are demanding services, but if we cannot get the funding from central government we cannot do any repairs to the roads under the control of the CBC.”
