Mayor of Chaguanas, His Worship Councillor Faaiq Mohammed, says the regional corporations need more resources to be able to deal with the extensive flooding being experienced during this year’s rainy season.
Speaking on CNC3’s The Morning Brew show, the Chaguanas Mayor said the lack of resources is a critical factor influencing the extent of flooding within the borough.
Mayor Mohammed was referring specifically to the situation in the Jerningham and Longdenville districts.
“With our resources being limited, we try our best to tackle these areas,” the mayor said. “We give priority to how we clear our water courses at this point in time.”
“We had a serious downfall with this rain,” he admitted. “It was something that we expected, but not at that level of rain. It caught us all—the whole country, I think—off-guard.”
Mayor Mohammed believes more government intervention is needed in order to effectively handle the situation.
“A bigger conversation needs to happen because year after year, people are constantly in this situation,” he said.
“We need to find solutions—not blame the persons that are in it [these situations]—but find solutions to help them get out of it,” the mayor argued.
Mayor Mohammed confirmed that the borough’s Disaster Management Unit will be attending to all the burgesses that were affected by the heavy rainfall and flooding which occurred over the weekend.
