Colombians plead guilty to weapon charges
Two Colombian nationals are expected to be sentenced on Monday after they pleaded guilty to possession of two guns and 19 rounds of ammunition yesterday.
Jointly charged with them, is a Trinidadian who pleaded not guilty and was granted $150,000 bail to cover all the charges. Colombians Diego Fernando Castano Vergara and Wilson Geovanny Ortiz, along with Christopher Mc Dowell, of Edinburgh, Chaguanas, appeared before Magistrate Avason Quinlan in the Point Fortin First Magistrates’ Court.
The Colombians had no legal representation and could not speak English. Through a spanish interpreter, police prosecutor Inspector Rohan Pardasie said around 6.30 pm on Tuesday PC Solomon and other officers were on patrol along Southern Central Road, Point Fortin when they intercepted a car.
The two foreigners, Pardasie said, were the back seat passengers. On searching the car, the police found an Astra pistol, a shotgun, 11 rounds of 12-gauge ammunition and eight rounds of 7.65 ammunition. The magistrate adjourned the case to Monday to allow the police time to determine whether the Colombians had any previous convictions or pending matters. Mc Dowell would also reappear in court on Monday.
