Police bullet left in rented car

Published: 2 Sep 2009

Police have found a live round of 9mm ammunition in a vehicle, which was once rented by the T&T Police Service, during a roadblock in Valencia on Monday afternoon. The ammunition was reportedly accidentally left in the vehicle by an officer before the car was returned to a rental company sometime last week. According to police sources, the heavily-tinted Lancer which had been assigned to the Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) was intercepted during a roadblock exercise by officers of Project 250, popularly known as the Bicycle Unit.

Officers at the Valencia Police Post received a call around 4.30 pm from a senior cop of the CIU. He said the vehicle which was seen heading towards Valencia was allegedly involved in a drug transaction. They requested that the vehicle be intercepted. However, there were only two officers in the station at the time. A call was made to officers of Project 250 who were conducting road exercises in the area and the vehicle was stopped. A search was conducted and the ammunition found. The driver told the lawmen he knew nothing about the ammunition but had rented the car on Friday. The man was taken to the Valencia Police Post where he was placed in a cell. CIU officers later contacted the station and informed the officers the ammunition belonged to one of their officers.

Sometime later, a senior cop arrived at the station and ordered that the man be released, since the ammunition was accidentally left in the vehicle, police said. However, officers of the Eastern Division said they believed there were more items which were left in the vehicle, and which might have been taken by people who came into contact with the vehicle after it was returned to the rental company. They also claimed that the entire incident was being covered up. It is reported CIU officers were searching for the vehicle shortly after it was discovered that certain items were left in the car.

So what we are seeing here is that the dunceys, to cover up their own negligence, made a false report that the car was involved in a crime, just to get access to the car to retrieve the items they left behind?

Mr Acting Police

Mr Acting Police Commissioner, act on this immediately. Everything of a shady nature should be investigated and not treated in a trivial manner.

The track record of this police service speaks for itself.

You're much smarter than that Mr Acting Commish. Come on now.

The only thing philly is going to say is "this comes at a time when we are trying to rebuild the public's confidence in the service"...then transfer..

Rented guns and rented cars?

Rented guns and rented cars? 'Curiouser and curiouser', this thing getting with our police service. Remember PC Salvary (RIP), and WPC Bernadette James (RIP), the former, a good swimmer who drowned at La Tinta Bay during a failed drug sting operation in which a good few US$ 'drowned' too ? The latter's light was 'outed' during training at Chaguaramas by what was supposed to be 'blank' ammunition, but which turned out to be not dead but live? Was anyone found culpable in any of the above-mentioned cases? Even if, in the instant case, everything is true as reported in the newpapers, how much police ammunition and weapons are 'lost' and fall into bona fide criminal hands because of police negligence or complicity? So what's new?: rented car and rented guns?

After all this they want we

After all this they want we to have confidence in the mickey mouse police service that we have in T&T.

i see why heavily tinted

i see why heavily tinted cars are not routinely stopped, searched, and the tint removed, they are occupied by untouchable criminals.
after being made illegal, you would think companies would remove heavy tint from their vehicles.

These same heavily tinted

These same heavily tinted vehicles are the ones who drive in a dangerous manner, using the shoulders of the roads as if it were another lane.

Only recently I saw a red band maxi taxi attempt to overtake a PTSC bus on the PBR in Barataria, while a blue car, heavily tinted, including the windscreen, overtake the maxi taxi, thus creating 3 lanes of traffic moving in the same direction. Crazy...

It is a Disgrace:-
An innocent citizen has been used and abused by some our 'finest'. The incompetence and behaviour that smacks of conspiracy by some of our Protective Services personnel resulted in an innocent person being dragged to jail, put in a cell and locked away. This could happened to anyone of us in the general public. Without a doubt this roadblock was ordered to retrieve their 'stuff' and cover-up their incompetence, and who knows what else. Sorry for you Mr. Joe Public, but you have had first hand experience of the unconscionable behaviour of some of our 'finest'. The fear from this experience could have resulted in this man having serious medical problems, or worst. It appears in T&T the average citizen is considered guilty of a crime and must prove their innocence, because of screw-ups by unprofessional officers who pick up a paycheque under false pretences: In other words, they are 'frauds' - 'wolves in sheep clothing'. This man should sue their pants off. Mr. Philbert you have to take this one on by yourself, as it seems that there are few within the ranks you can truly trust. Calls for the public to join forces with the police to make improvements is a hard sell.

The President wants more from the Police; the public wants more from the police. But it seems that we are continually standing in line waiting with empty calabash/bowls.

Mr. Manning instead of spending our billions of dollars on those questionable - 4 'birds in the sky' why not invest that money on 'terra firma' to do a complete overhaul of our Police Department. Your 'delusiions of grandeur' will not save us.

'CIU officers were searching for the vehicle shortly after it was discovered that certain items were left in the car.' Now lemmi see if ah get this right? Who rented the car from whom? Couldn't these key stone cops gone to the rental office and gotten information on who rented the car and their address? And waited or had someone call the driver? How big is this rock again? And one wonders why the many stolen vehicles are never recovered. But they could hide well from cameras when they go to court; even sending out "scouts." No confidence in the dept, translates into no conviction in the courts.

Somebody should really take

Somebody should really take care of this things honestly. You can't shot into a rented car and then let the poor people pay for it. When I broke a window to the car I rented once, the owner told me to leave the it in a donate a car shop but to give him the money for the car.
