An ex-soldier was denied bail yesterday when he appeared in court for allegedly beating his five-year-old stepson with a hammer.
Shivon Harrilal, 29, of Santa Clara Road, Preysal appeared before Magistrate Marcia Ayers Caesar in the Couva Magistrates' Court. He was represented by attorney Mark Seepersad. Charged with assault occasioning actual grievous bodily harm, he was not called upon to plead. It is alleged that Harrilal beat the child following a dispute at his home on August 31.
He was charged by PC Smith of the Couva CID. Sgt Sharon Corbette told the magistrate that the boy who had been warded at the San Fernando General Hospital was discharged yesterday. However, she objected to bail on the grounds that it was a serious offence. The magistrate upheld the objection and denied him bail. He was advised of his right to apply to a judge in chambers for bail. The matter was adjourned to September 22.
