A man wanted by police in connection with more than 20 murders in the Port-of-Spain Division was among two people shot and killed during a confrontation with police at Sawmill Avenue, Morvant, yesterday.
The shooting took place in a house at the corner of Small and Garrick Streets.
One of the victims has been identified as Tyrone Randy Brown.
Brown, 29, of Gonzales, Belmont, and St Barbs Road, Laventille, was popularly known as "T" and "Spoon."
Up to late yesterday, the second victim remained unidentified.
Both men died while undergoing emergency surgery at Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope.
"We have been hunting Spoon for several years in connection with countless murders, but he somehow managed to elude capture," said a police officer.
Police said Brown was identified as one of the men involved in the killing of Sean Sandy and his girlfriend Avian Villafanna, 24, who were gunned down at their Hamlet Trace, St Barb's, Laventille, home on November 28, 2006.
Officers at the Besson Street Police Station said Brown was the "main shooter" for the infamous "Sandy Brothers Gang," but turned on the gang after a dispute.
His face appeared in every "most wanted" poster issued by the T&T Police Service over the past few years.
Brown's end came around 11.15 am yesterday, after he was cornered at a house in Morvant and killed during a reported shoot-out with officers of the North Eastern Division Task Force.
Officers said a pistol and revolver were recovered from the scene. Hours earlier, police said, Brown and his accomplice managed to escape a police dragnet at Never Dirty, by hijacking a garbage truck and escaping into Sawmill Avenue.
Police said Brown and a group of men shot at them and fled into nearby bushes around 7 pm in Never Dirty.
The Special Anti-Crime Unit, Criminal Intelligence Unit, North-Eastern Division and the Interagency Task Force had been conducting exercises in the area since Monday evening.
