3 in court for teacher’s killing

The third man held in connection with the murder of Sangre Grande school teacher Bhasmat Seemungal-Akaloo was brought to court yesterday.When 26-year-old Derwin David Parris appeared before Senior Magistrate Ejenny Espinet in the Sangre Grande Magistrates’ Court, he stood next to Seemungal-Akaloo’s policeman husband, Sunil and spiritual healer, Marlon Lee, who are also charged with the crime. The matter was adjourned to October 16.

Seemungal-Akaloo was kidnapped from her Cunaripo home around 3 am on September 14 by four armed men. Her body was found hours later, not too far from where she lived. Her body bore chop and stab wounds. Woman Sgt Beverly Paul laid the charges. Parris, of Eastern Quarry Laventille, also stood before Espinet charged with the murder of Wendell Morris and attempting to murder Nneka Campbell. He was also charged with four firearm related offences. Those charges stemmed from a shooting at Eastern Quarry on May 21. That matter was transferred to the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Court. Sgt Parks of the Special anti-Crime Unit laid the charges.
