A 13-year-old schoolboy was stabbed to death late yesterday during a dispute with three other schoolboys in San Juan.
A 15-year-old boy, held in connection with the incident, remained under police guard at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex last night. He was reportedly beaten by irate pedestrians who saw what had happened. Two other suspects were later detained and taken to the Barataria Police Station for questioning. The victim has been identified as Maliq Hillaire, of Locas Hill, Sixth Avenue, San Juan. Hillaire was a Form One student of the Barataria Secondary School. Police said the incident occurred at the corners of Third Avenue and First Street.
The injured suspect, a student of the Malick Senior Comprehensive School, sustained injuries after he was beaten by several people who held him shortly after the stabbing. Police said they had to rush to the scene and rescue the suspect from the hands of irate villagers. According to a police report, Hillaire was walking along the roadway when he was approached by three students who reportedly tried to rob him. A struggle ensued and one of the suspects whipped out a knife and stabbed Hilliare in the neck.
The victim ran along the roadway, through a nearby car park, and collapsed on a staircase a short distance from his home. He was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex where he died while undergoing emergency surgery. A team of officers led by Supt David Abraham, Insp Edwards and Sgts Ramjit and Sahadeo visited the scene. Investigations are continuing.
