Arsonists firebombed two cars at St Croix in Princes Town late on Sunday night. Police said Vijay Persad, 38, of Saffarali Lane, St Croix, was in bed around 11.30, when he heard his neighbours shouting: "Fire! Fire! " Persad said when he looked out he saw a white Tiana car, belonging to his neighbour, engulfed in flames. His car was parked next to the burning vehicle.
However, Persad said he made no attempt to douse the flames. "I stayed inside, because I wasn't sure if the car will blow up. We called the fire officers and by the time they came, the two cars were engulfed." Next door neighbour Zubaida Allamani said she was terrified that her apartment would become engulfed. "It was lucky that the fire officers came in ten minutes and they extinguished the fire. There was smoke everywhere, but luckily no one was hurt."
Police found a keg filled with kerosene close by. It is alleged that the arsonists threw the kerosene at the front of the cars before setting them ablaze. Damage to both vehicles was estimated at $200,000. Anyone with information on the firebombing can contact Princes Town police.
