Published: 24 Dec 2009

Moments after leaving a Port-of-Spain nightclub with her 24-year-old boyfriend, a 16-year-old girl was kidnapped, raped and robbed by two gunmen yesterday. According to police, around 2.30 am, the couple was about to enter a vehicle parked at the Queen’s Park Savannah, when two gunmen approached.

The men ordered the victims to drive the vehicle to the Lookout on Lady Young Road, Belmont. Both victims were robbed of cash and valuables. One of the men took the teen to a nearby track and sexually assaulted her, before fleeing the scene on foot.

Why so much emphasis on the

Why so much emphasis on the girls age? should it have happened to someone else's 19 year old daughter, or some young childs 24 year old mother? The point is it shold heanous act should not have happened to any one at all, at all!.So why is the name of the night club not mentioned? People must be in the know about these incidents and where they happen, so they can be aware and if they so please, do not patronize the club. More so, what about the club owner? should he not be held somewhat accountable for this? If he is the one making all his money from these young party goers one would have thought he would at least make sure that there are protected even when coming and leaving his nightclub at these hours, I'm sure he would probably loose a couple regulars, at least for a while, until the horror and fear wear off the ones that got away! till next time.. I say he must provide a secure enviroment both in and out of the club, have more than one guard in these lonely areas, ensure when patrons leave at least they get to their car safely and drive away, what happens after that is out of his control. I guess we all should be greatful that both are alive, the frightening thing is that this is not the first time that this kind of thing happened and in will definitly will not be the last, but we cam make a difference if we all stand up and say NO MORE!! do something about it or else!!

Very concerned parent.

oh please are u guys

oh please are u guys serious? its the NORM for kids to b going to nightclubs in trinidad well probably except for zen. but space, sky, sting and edge are full blown with underage teenagers. and the teenagers are so bold they're no longer worried about "getting ketch" they UPLOAD PICS OF THEM IN THE CLUB to their facebook profiles! y? cuz they're teenagers and once there arent measures to stop them from entering the clubs they WILL do so. Funny i should speak like this considering i'm a teenager myself. i have friends who go clubbing everyweek!!! and they're wat 16/17. hell the owner of sky nightclub has his UNDERAGE SON promoting parties and "free drinks" on his facebook page.

i wait for the day wen the police makes a crackdown. its only when another serious incident happens then people would start taking notice.

Violence on the

Violence on the Innocent:-

Violence pervades in this little country of ours. Will we ever see the day when we can walk outdoors in the knowledge that our safety and securiity are guaranteed. I still have hope. But I am certain that some may say that I am delusional.

We cannot continue to blame the victims. Yes, there may be intelligent concerns expressed as to these young people and their sense of responsibility or lack thereof. But this should not be our No. 1 concern here.

Our emphasis should be on the violators and the reasons that got them to the place where they are; where they have convinced themselves that they have the right to attack, rape and rob our innocent citizens and expect to walk away freely.

Home life is important. Parents and guardians have a responsibility to care for their child/children. When they neglect their duties or are unable to do so, they will leave these young people open to negative influences some of which may draw them to a life of crime. A caring community can help to fill in the void sometimes and should be encouraged. We have been informed that it 'takes a village to raise a child' and I agree with this line of thinking.

Unfortunately, our systems that are there to go after and control the criminals have let us down. The Police Department has not been always available to come to our rescue, thereby allowing criminals to walk around feeling free to do as they wish, and know that they would not be caught and brought to justice.

We have a gov't in office that has been playing games with out safety and security. Starting from the top, the position of Commissioner of Police has been treated by this gov't as though it is a gambling game of luck and chance. They refuse to see the importance of this position in managing the affairs of the Police Department, and have left the department teetering on the brink, and our citizens in peril.

This gov't has spent millions of our dollars on foreign consultants, studies, and all sorts of paraphernalia with the excuse that they were seriously working on attacking the exploding criminal activities in T&T. But what we have seen convinces us that they have been on the wrong track in their attempts to control and address crime. Our Minister of National Security it would appear is oblivious of his role and the portfolio he is assigned to.

Our legal system is understaffed and struggling to cope with the situation facing us in this country and they are not getting the full support from this government.

These are some of the reasons that have allowed crime to continue
their rage and destruction on our people.

We cannot continue to blame the victims. This mind-set is destructive and it gives support to the criminals to continue violating the rights of our citizens; and the gov't that refuses to face the facts and address crime with the urgency and seriousness it deserves. Until and unless this gov't step up to place and acknowledge the problems we are facing and get serious about crime, we may never see any decrease coming our way, in this decade.

This young man will live his life in fear, and this young girl who has been violated in the most shameless manner, will perhaps never be able to feel safe in her own country. What a shame and disgrace.

I hope that the protective services will be able to arrest these vile men and send them away from civilised society with the harshest penalty.

Will we ever see crime on the decrease? Mr. Manning, we deserve a decent and honest answer from you. You are after all the Prime Minister of The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

If we are tempted to say

If we are tempted to say 'what was a 16 yr old doing out in the savannah at 2am with a 24yr old man',let's please hold that thought. Why is our society so violent? Is it the government, the police, the family? The young lady clearly ignored reality. Her life is scarred forever. The young fella will recover, since he didn't suffer that horrific sexual violation and possible HIV infection.

...blaming the victim is

...blaming the victim is commonplace in a society replete with double standards....we are reaping what we sowed....

Well said! I am tired of the

Well said!
I am tired of the way we as Trinidadians constantly rationalise violent crime via the "dey look for dat" logic.
Is that how we convince ourselves that we safe because we not "looking for it"?
It seems that within minutes of the report of a kidnapping, murder, rape or other violent crime, we start getting the "inside story" of "what really happen". And these stories invariably blame the victim.
Don't we realize the implications of this behaviour? If we are so willing to look for and/or imagine a justification of each criminal action, isn't it to be expected that the government and police following public perception would tend to trivialize crimes as well.

Remember that poor little girl murdered and stuffed under a house in Laventille? Even Manning say he had an "inside story" that put blame on the child's mother.

Okay, so as usual, perhaps

Okay, so as usual, perhaps it's the Government's fault that a 16-yr old was going to a popular nightspot with her 24-yr old boyfriend and leaving at 2.30 a.m., ent? Oh no, but iz de police who shoulda escort dem to de car and make sure dey reach home safe - cudda even provide police escort!
And de family????

I hope you mean the parents - well yes I would ask why would parents of a 16 yr. old allow her to be dating a 24 year old. What is a 16-year old even doing in a nightclub - which is supposed to have an age limit? (Wasn't that the excuse of Akon that Club Zen has an age limit so that there should've been no minors there?)

There is violence in society, and parents should start ensuring that their young children, if they are going 'dating' - they should be going in groups. Just common sense would've prevented this catastrophe.

Perhaps it's also time for the Night Clubs to be charged for allowing minors in their clubs - licensed for adults.

You're having a laugh.

You're having a laugh.

"Okay, so as usual, perhaps it's the Government's fault that a 16-yr old was going to a popular nightspot with her 24-yr old boyfriend and leaving at 2.30 a.m., ent? Oh no, but iz de police who shoulda escort dem to de car and make sure dey reach home safe - cudda even provide police escort!"

It is the Government's fault!! Period. She should be able to leave such a nightspot with a 100 year old man at 04:00AM and not run the risk of being raped! Who dee hell responsible for the tsunami of a crime wave? You have a Government who could spend money like is nobody business on Privy Congcil cases, Palaces, Stadiums, Attack Helichopters, blimps, near miss on purchasing a private jet for $60M, and all manner of other tomfoolery to was'e money, and dey cyah beat a bunch ah criminals - come nah man. All yuh real makin' fun wid a serious matter.

Hear what put me in charge - and crime will come to a virtual halt on Donkey Rock (aka T&T). The reality is that crime is being used as a means of oppressing the population, for political ends. Allyuh memory short..allyuh seem to forget dat jes before dee las' elecshan crime rate had drop by some 40% or supm. And watch wha' go happen jes before dee nex elecshan.

Who put dee government in power? Is not dee people who vote dem een? When yuh make yuh bed yuh have to lie in it eh. Allyuh like it soooooh... drink a rum and a ponche creme .. drink a rum.. boy i's carnaval rong dee corner.. allyuh free up man!

What happened to the couple,

What happened to the couple, especially the teenager was terrible and these criminals should pay for what they did, but the night club should be held accountable for letting a minor into the club, are there age limit for clubbing and drinking in Trinidad? The parents are also responsible for allowing a 16 year old to date a 24 year old
