Pensioner beaten to death at home
Homicide officers are investigating the killing of a Point Fortin pensioner who was found bludgeoned to death at his home yesterday.
Police said Alwyn Borrel, 65, a retired fire officer of Richardson Street Extension, Point Fortin, was found dead around 10 am. He was lying face down on his bed. A blood-stained piece of two-by-four was found on the ground, close to the bedside. Investigators have ruled out robbery as a motive for the murder as the house was intact. A DVD was playing in the bedroom and Borrel’s car was parked in the yard. Borrel’s best friend Martin Alexander said he last spoke to Borrel yesterday morning.
“He was a nice man and I do not know how anybody could kill him just so. He was always helpful. He was a man of class,” Alexander said. He said on Wednesday night, some of Borrel’s relatives came to visit him at home. The house is located in a deserted area off an oilfield road. Alexander said there were only three houses in the oilfield road and all of the neighbours looked out for each other.
“Whenever I see him, I would call him out. On Wednesday, one of the neighbours had a bushfire and he came out to help them,” Alexander said.
Neighbours said Borrel was a retired fire officer at Trinmar and was well loved by all. A close relative who requested anonymity said Borrel lived alone at the house, after separating from his wife. Sgt Sookraj of the Point Fortin police are continuing investigations.
