A 25-year-old construction worker was stabbed to death during Point Fortin Borough Day celebrations yesterday morning. The man was stabbed after he refused to buy another man a beer, police said. Bertrand Charles, father of a three-year-old girl, was attacked around 3 am, mere hours before the start of J'Ouvert. Police said Bertrand's refusal to buy the beer led to an altercation, and he was stabbed with a broken bottle in the neck. Bertrand, of New Village in Point Fortin, died at hospital. Charles' younger sister, Stacy, said they were near Shoe Locker in Point Fortin when he had an argument with a man whom he knew.
Bertrand, she said, complained that for the past three days the man had been threatening to kill him. She said she pulled her brother aside and begged him to go home. "But he hug me and kiss me and tell me that he calm down." She said she left for home shortly afterwards, because she had to work. The woman got home around 3 am when another sister, Sherryann, got the news that Charles was dead.
She described her brother as "miserable, and cool when he ready."
Up to late yesterday, Point Fortin police had a suspect in custody. An autopsy is listed for tomorrow.
