Former State attorney at the office of the Attorney General Rehanna Hosein has been appointed as a magistrate. She was appointed at a simple ceremony on August 23, at the Hall of Justice in Port-of-Spain. Chief Justice Ivor Archie and acting Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington were also present at the appointment.
Hosein, an attorney for 13 years, worked at the department of the Chief State Solicitor, in the AG's office. She had been employed there since 2002 and had also worked as a prosecutor in the Director of Public Prosecutions' office, prior to that.
She was also retained as a special adviser to the Ministry of Legal Affairs, before her appointment to the AG's office. Since her appointment, Hosein has been training with other magistrates at the Port-of-Spain Magistrates' Court. Most recently, yesterday, she sat beside Magistrate Wendy Dougdeen-Bally in the Sixth (Traffic) Court.
Hosein was actively involved in several 'high-profile" lawsuits brought against the State and the AG. Most memorably, she was an instructing attorney for Douglas Mendes, SC, in a series of lawsuits brought by retired Chief Justice Satnarine Sharma against the State, for the intended impeachment proceedings. Hosein is expected to start her magisterial duties at the start of the new law term in mid-September.
