Gasparillo mason Terry Leon Singh was given one week to pay $9,000 in fines yesterday after pleading guilty to cocaine trafficking and marijuana possession. Singh, 22, of Parforce Road, appeared before San Fernando Sixth Court Magistrate Nizam Khan.
Khan, in passing sentence on Singh said: "Cocaine is a dangerous drug, even one rock can be deadly." He was arrested on Parforce Road, Gasparillo, on December 9, 2010. He was charged with having 50 packets of cocaine, totalling 13.5 grammes, in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
He also was charged with having one packet of marijuana, totalling 5.6 grammes, in his possession.
Police prosecutor Ramdath Phillip recommended summary trial for both charges and Singh pleaded guilty. Singh's defence attorney Sharmilla Rampaul asked for a non-custodial sentence. She said the drugs Singh had in his possession were relatively a small quantity. (RR)
