A man who police suspect to be an "international terrorist" was detained for questionning on Saturday night at the Piarco International Airport. The man, an Iranian national, is reportedly wanted by the police in the United Kingdom. He was attempting to board British Airways flight 2158 to London at 9.10 pm when he was held by Special Branch officers.
The suspect had in his possession a British passport. A senior officer said, however, that the suspect was later released by the police because "all his papers were correct." When questioned about the incident yesterday, National Security Minister John Sandy said he heard "a report about it." An Immigration officer at the airport said: "We are not at liberty to give any of that kind of information."
Officials at the Airport Authority said they did not know about the arrest and referred the T&T Guardian to the police. Attempts to contact British Airways personnel proved futile yesterday. Chief Immigration Officer Andy Edwards was also not available for comment.
