A man who po­lice sus­pect to be an "in­ter­na­tion­al ter­ror­ist" was de­tained for ques­tion­ning on Sat­ur­day night at the Pi­ar­co In­ter­na­tion­al Air­port. The man, an Iran­ian na­tion­al, is re­port­ed­ly want­ed by the po­lice in the Unit­ed King­dom. He was at­tempt­ing to board British Air­ways flight 2158 to Lon­don at 9.10 pm when he was held by Spe­cial Branch of­fi­cers.

The sus­pect had in his pos­ses­sion a British pass­port. A se­nior of­fi­cer said, how­ev­er, that the sus­pect was lat­er re­leased by the po­lice be­cause "all his pa­pers were cor­rect." When ques­tioned about the in­ci­dent yes­ter­day, Na­tion­al Se­cu­ri­ty Min­is­ter John Sandy said he heard "a re­port about it." An Im­mi­gra­tion of­fi­cer at the air­port said: "We are not at lib­er­ty to give any of that kind of in­for­ma­tion."

Of­fi­cials at the Air­port Au­thor­i­ty said they did not know about the ar­rest and re­ferred the T&T Guardian to the po­lice. At­tempts to con­tact British Air­ways per­son­nel proved fu­tile yes­ter­day. Chief Im­mi­gra­tion Of­fi­cer Andy Ed­wards was al­so not avail­able for com­ment.
