Resh­ma Ra­goonath

A sol­dier has ap­peared in court charged with five of­fences, in­clud­ing aid­ing and abet­ting the es­cape of a pris­on­er. Pri­vate Ryan Gas­pard stood be­fore deputy Chief Mag­is­trate Mark Welling­ton in the San Fer­nan­do First Court where five charges were read to him.

He was charged with re­sist­ing ar­rest, ob­struct­ing Cpl Ju­nior Mar­celle in the ex­e­cu­tion of his du­ty, as­sault­ing Cpl Mar­celle, un­law­ful dam­age of Cpl Mar­celle's prop­er­ty, name­ly a pair of den­im jeans, and aid­ing and abet­ting the es­cape of a pris­on­er in law­ful cus­tody.

The of­fences are al­leged to have tak­en place on Sun­day at Mara­bel­la.

Gas­pard was placed on $20,000 bail by a Jus­tice of the Peace af­ter his ar­rest. The mag­is­trate did not in­ter­fere with the bail bond. Gas­pard was re­mand­ed to court on Feb­ru­ary 21, 2011.
