Pres­i­dent Paula-Mae Weekes has ap­point­ed Sun­day Oc­to­ber 27, 2019 as the of­fi­cial hol­i­day for the Hin­du fes­ti­val of lights, Di­vali.

This ac­cord­ing to a press re­lease is­sued by the Min­istry of Com­mu­ni­ca­tions around 2.30 pm to­day (Oc­to­ber 2.)

The Pres­i­dent’s an­nounce­ment is in ac­cor­dance with the Pub­lic Hol­i­days and Fes­ti­vals Act.

Al­though it was not not­ed in the re­lease, ac­cord­ing to the Act, Chap­ter 19:05, 3. (2) "Where a pub­lic hol­i­day falls on a Sun­day or where two pub­lic hol­i­days fall on the same day, the next fol­low­ing day that (apart from this sub­sec­tion) is not a pub­lic hol­i­day shall be a pub­lic hol­i­day."
