A Tobago doctor who was shot while using her body as a human shield to protect her baby from gunmen in Argyle, is said to be recovering well at the hospital.
The shooting happened outside Pablo’s Supermarket on Windward Road, Argyle, on Thursday night.
Thirty-five-year-old Dr Iana Parrissienne-James was injured in the attack while she and her one-year-old daughter were waiting in her car.
Police said at 7.55 pm, Parrissienne-James and her daughter were seated in their car when the shots rang out. Her husband, who had gone into the supermarket moments before, rushed back to the vehicle after hearing the gunfire. He found his wife in the back seat, crouched protectively over their daughter, bleeding from a wound to her right shoulder.
Parrissienne-James was immediately taken to Roxborough General Hospital for treatment, before being transferred to Scarborough General Hospital by ambulance.
This incident follows the murder of Victoria Amanda Guerra, also known as Dolly Boss, at Lammy Road, Argyle, just three days earlier.
Meanwhile, Health, Wellness and Social Protection Secretary Dr Faith B.Yisrael yesterday said she was saddened by the latest incident.
She told Guardian Media, “It’s unfortunate that regular citizens are now being tortured by the level of criminality on the island, and I would use this opportunity to call on everyone to join in this fight to ensure we do not continue to endure this criminal activity.”
Police officers from the Roxborough Police Station, along with members of the Tobago Divisional Task Force and the Guard and Emergency Branch, responded to the incident and recovered five spent shells. Investigations are ongoing.
When Guardian Media visited the area, residents said they were too afraid to speak and would only say they were fearful of being the next target.
