The Downtown Owners and Merchants Association (DOMA) is calling on the owners of an abandoned building on #82-84 Queen Janelle Commisiong Street in Port of Spain to act as the location is being looted and rapidly becoming a site for questionable activity.
DOMA issued a statement on the matter today, saying:
“We are unable to determine which government agency is the owner of the premises … We have been advised that the property does not belong to Ministry of Finance, nor the Port of Spain Corporation.”
The building, which is at the corner of Queen and Edward Streets, used to house some departments of the Board of Inland Revenue.
“It is currently being stripped and looted of window frames, doors, gates, bathroom fixtures, light fittings and ceilings,” DOMA reports. “The building is also currently occupied by unknown homeless persons and there are reports of school children going in and out of the abandoned structure.”
DOMA is hoping the correct owners can be alerted as to what is taking place at their property, “so that counter measures can be taken.”
“We trust that action will be taken immediately to protect the building and therefore all the interests of this area of the city,” DOMA said.
