The Ministry of Education has outlined the registration process for migrant children entering the local school system. Effective September 2024, migrant children from the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela will be admitted into schools in Trinidad and Tobago.
The registration process for these children will commence next Tuesday, on June 25.
The Education Ministry says the initiative complies with the Immigration (Amendment) (No.2) Regulations 2024 and targets Venezuelan nationals under eighteen whose parents registered with the Ministry of National Security (MNS) in 2019 and continue to register annually under the Migrant Registration Framework (MRF).
The Ministry says parents are required to visit the Education District Office nearest to their residence on Tuesdays and Thursdays to complete and sign the "Application for Admission of Migrants of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela into Schools."
Parents must bring the following documents (original and one copy) to complete the registration process:
1. Minister’s Permit under the MRF and Migrant Registration Card (Children without this permit are ineligible for school entry).
2. Certified translation of the child's Birth Certificate.
3. Child’s Immunization Record.
4. Proof of Address (a letter from the landlord with a copy of a recent utility bill as verification).
5. Passport-sized photo of the child.
Parents are encouraged to visit the appropriate district office to ensure their children can access education under this new regulation.
The Education Ministry notes:
1. The application process includes applying for a Student Permit Exemption from the Ministry of National Security.
2. Submission of an application does not guarantee placement; admission depends on available space at schools.
3. Incomplete applications lacking any of the required documents will not be processed.
