A Freeport man was shot dead on Tues­day night a short dis­tance away from the Freeport Po­lice Sta­tion.

The man, who has been iden­ti­fied as Ricky Chanker­dial, of Uquire Road, Freeport, was stand­ing out­side D Mix Bar along Are­na Road when he was shot by the oc­cu­pants of a car which was dri­ving past him. He died at the scene.

Po­lice said Chanker­dial, al­so known as "Baghas," was a for­mer pris­on­er and known to them. He was said to be in his ear­ly 30s.

On Au­gust 23, 2017, the moth­er of Chanker­dial's five-year-old son was found mur­dered and her body burnt along with two oth­er men at a house in Carlsen Field.

At the time of the mur­ders, Chanker­dial was serv­ing a prison term for car theft. The child has since been liv­ing with his moth­er's rel­a­tives.

This lat­est in­ci­dent brings the mur­der toll to 490. In­ves­ti­ga­tions are con­tin­u­ing.
