Investigators are awaiting instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions on whether to charge a 35-year-old suspect in connection with the death of Police Constable Krishna Banahar.
Police said the file was submitted to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions yesterday. Officers were awaiting instructions.
Another man, civilian Hakim Joseph, 44, was also fatally shot. Banahar, 25, and Joseph were fighting when the suspect opened fire on them at St Rose Street in Gonzales Village, Guapo, on November 6.
Banahar was shot multiple times. Banahar’s colleagues returned fire, discharging four rounds of ammunition. During the melee, Joseph was also shot.
Banahar and other officers of the South Western Division were on an anti-crime exercise and had gone to execute a search warrant for arms and ammunition at a house close to where the shooting occurred.
The suspect, who police said is related to Joseph, was arrested hours after the incident.
Banahar had five years of service and was assigned to the Siparia CID.
He was given a military funeral, which was attended by hundreds of people, including National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds, Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher and First and Second Division officers of the TTPS.
The service was held at Banahar’s Fyzabad home while the cremation was conducted at the Shore of Peace at Mosquito Creek, South Oropouche. -Sascha Wilson
