Education Minister Anthony Garcia has said that Monday’s stabbing of school teacher Cathy Maharaj at St Pious Boys’ School in Arouca occurred after a breakdown in security protocols, normally followed by security officers.
Maharaj was stabbed with an ice pick several times but survived. Garcia said under protocols a security officer has a responsibility to inquire regarding a visitor’s business at a school and if they felt it was legitimate, they had to escort the person to the principal’s office.
“What happened was a breakdown in protocols regarding the security,” he added.
Garcia said counselling was obtained for students and teachers and follow up help would be delivered as the need arises
The attacker fled the scene but police later identified him as the ex-boyfriend of one of Maharaj’s close female relatives.
On another Opposition query, Public Utilities Minister Robert Le Hunte said the incident where Aranguez farmers’ pumps were seized was not the same situation - or date- as reports of incidents where dirty water was used to wash vegetables. He said the pump seizure was May 11 and stemmed from increased vigilance by Wasa police in the dry season where water resources are limited.
