Africa—Her People, Her Glory, Her Tears presented by Brian Mac Farlane and Meet Superblue by Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez won Band of the Year and Road March titles respectively in downtown Carnival competitions this year. Port-of-Spain Mayor Murchison Brown announced the results in a hastily arranged news conference at his office last evening. It was the third consecutive victory for Mac Farlane in the large bands category.

Placing second was Sweet T&T—A Tribute to T&T by Trini Revellers, led by David Cameron and third place went to Kingdom of the Dragon—a presentation of Mike Antoine’s Legacy. And Brown said in the downtown Road March competition Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez was the most played song, 83 times. Bacchanal performed by Destra Garcia placed second having being played 32 times, while Blaxx was third with Tusty.

Brown said Carnival celebrations in downtown Port-of-Spain was very successful as there were more bands competing despite the international economic meltdown. “Fifty-nine bands crossed the stage yesterday...last year we had 53. So inspite of the economic situation, we saw an increase in the number of bands that crossed the stage,” he added.
