Michelle Obama not coming
Michelle Obama
US First Lady Michelle Obama is not coming to Trinidad and Tobago with her husband, President Barack Obama, for the Fifth Summit of the Americas, which starts tomorrow at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Port-of-Spain. The T&T Guardian was informed by an official of the US Embassy in Port-of-Spain, that Michelle has decided to stay at her White House residence with her daughters, Malia, ten and Sasha, seven, who are enjoying an Easter break from school. She has also decided to abort the Mexico trip which her husband embarks on today, for one day, before he flies into Trinidad tomorrow.
Obama will fly in tomorrow afternoon aboard Air Force One, with his personal staff, Secret Service agents and a number of US journalists. Also expected on the same flight is Mexican President Felipe Calderon, with whom Obama will hold talks later today on Mexico’s battle against drug cartels operating in Latin America.
Another reason Michelle has opted out of the two-nation tour was that she is continuing her tour to thank employees of various Cabinet agencies for their service to the US. The T&T public has been looking forward to the visit of the Obamas. While Obama may be inaccessible to the public because of the intense security around him, the public felt that seeing and meeting Michelle was a real possibility.
Had she come, Michelle would have gone with the spouses to a special programme arranged for them on Saturday. The spouses are being taken by water taxi to the Wild Fowl Trust, Pointe-a-Pierre, and the Caroni Bird Sanctuary facilities. Security officials in Trinidad have remained tight-lipped as to where Obama will be staying during his two-day visit to Trinidad. There is a booking for him at the Hilton where 1,000 members of the US delegation will be housed during the Summit. There was a report last night that Obama may be the guest of Prime Minister Patrick Manning at his official residence at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s. But, this remained unconfirmed.
"Another reason Michelle has
"Another reason Michelle has opted out of the two-nation tour was that she is continuing her tour to thank employees of various Cabinet agencies for their service to the US." Now that's a great woman she puts her country and countrymen first, I wish our leaders could do the same and put the people of T&T First..
All the big hoopla....fixing
All the big hoopla....fixing LaBrea road, closing the entrance to the A&E at the hospital and now she not coming, hahahahaha, ah wonder who else not coming, ah guess we have to wait and see or in this case hear
Don't Sweat the Small
Don't Sweat the Small Stuff
You might be dissapointed but let's face up. As wife of the most powerful leader whose country is going through some tough times, would you want to be seen as being wined and dined on some small tropical island when so many of the citizens are in dire economc conditions. She got enough attention in Europe recently.
Maybe someone would have the guts to invite them and keep them safe after his term(s) are up to take in a carnival.
News only in Trinidad.
News only in Trinidad.
Michelle not like Mrs. Manning, only waiting for a chance to get out and in front as a pappy show.
Please there is no news coverage of this summit in the US. They have bigger fish to fry. What a joke.
I agree with you
I agree with you
Its true ..no one in America
Its true ..no one in America knows of this impending visit except the few people I have told while I monitor the T & T news.....
Lets us be honest, the woman
Lets us be honest, the woman does not want to put herself and her two daughters at risk in that hellhole, she prefers to play it safe and let her husband be the man and live up to his Presidential obligations…I do not blame her.
Stay away from places like Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, etc…hello!
Besides, here in North America, nobody cares…what a joke.
I like the Obamas a lot, but
I like the Obamas a lot, but Michelle went to Europe for the summit there for a few days. I do not see why she cannot attend the summit in Trinidad for 2 days. I find that very poor. It shows that the Latin American and Caribbean regions do not not matter as much, in my opinion.
To those of you who say no one in America cares about the summit in Trinidad and that it is not being covered on the news, I say to you that America needs to start caring more for the large nations as well as the small. That is partly the reason they are in (and have the rest of the world in as well) the financial mess today, because they tend to care mainly for themselves (individually and as a country). America is a hugh country, but there is a whole world out there, and America needs to market themselves differently. The way of life as it was has changed very quickly, and we can no longer be self-centered.
I can go on and on about this, but I hope you get my point.
Whatever the reason
Whatever the reason Michelle chose for not attending the summit I am in total agreement with her and I am a Trini and to be quite frank when T&T finds itself in the same financial mess that the rest of the world is in they will have nobody ( least of all America) to blame but the one and only Patrick Manning and the PNM government.....even I can go on and on about this
The rest of the world will
The rest of the world will start caring, when T & T start caring about themselves.
When the PNM party and the rest of the Governments can commence solving the crimes, finding lost children, putting an end to corruptions, and giving a damn about the elderly, the poor and the sick, thus, showing improvement, subsequently, maybe the rest of us will begin to take notice.
Until then it’s the same old Trinidad we all walked away from 20, 30, 40 and 50 years ago, entertaining and showing off for everyone else, begging for attention, but refuses to give a slice of dry bread to the hungry right in their very own land!
Therefore, I ask you, who should care…?
Like I said, we don’t blame Michelle Obama, the woman is better off in her fortress, just like the Manning’s, she deserves that too.
