Officers of the Guard and Emergency Branch (GEB) squared off with a coalition group over a drum protest at the St James Ampitheatre.
Members explained that they were granted permission to use the facility, only to be told by the GEB, after the event had started, that they had to disperse or face arrest. The incident caused tempers to flare, as many verbally lashed out at the Government for not dealing with pertinent issues at the Fifth Summit of the Americas.

Hurling remarks, the protesters jeered the GEB for “abusing their authority and not having a grip on crime.” Truth Drummers is a coalition of several farming, civil rights and environmental groups in T&T, who included Verna St Rose, Peter Vine and Prof Wayne Kublalsingh. “Shame on you! Prime Minister Patrick Manning is a dictator! This is our right!” the members screamed at the GEB, who were armed with guns, batons and shields over their faces, as they inched into their space. But the situation was quelled when Senior Superintendent Eulyn Julius intervened, advising the GEB to return to the nearby St James Police Station.

Attorney Vernon De Lima, who spoke to three senior officers present, warned that if they touched one member, the situation could result in loss of life. “I am sure the police are more frightened than these people here,” De Lima remarked. “We are not going to let fear stop us,” St Rose chipped in, waxing up the crowd. Unfazed by the threats, the members stood their ground, refusing the budge.

Superintendent Smith instructed the DJ to turn off the speakers. Protesters then lost their cool and shouted down the police for several minutes. “We are losing our democracy,” shouted Wendell Manwarren of 3-Canal. “What will your children inherit? We own this country. We have a right to expression of freedom.” In passing their stinging comments, they chastised the Government for spending billions on the summit which they claim will not benefit the people of T&T in the years to come.

The USA and President Obama

The USA and President Obama are supposedly on a mission to spread democracy around the world.
They need to take a closer look at Trinidad & Tobago, where citizens are not allowed to protest peacefully and the Government is rampaging roughshod over the people.
At the G20 Summit, we saw protests in the UK and other European countries which were not put down by the police or the army.
So why can T & T citizens not protest and show their displeasure over what is happening?
T & T is being run (or run out) under a virtual dictatorship, where the voice of the majority (who did not vote for the current Government) is constantly being ignored or suppressed.

Why doesn't the GEB come out

Why doesn't the GEB come out with their guns and batons to find murderers and kidnappers, instead of coming out to harrass people speaking for their rights....on second thought they only following orders from their commander in chief, the dictator himself Patrick Manning

Why did these people choose

Why did these people choose to protest now? They never protested when rice, sugar or gasoline went up. They do not protest when rogue elements are disrupting their lives. These people are looking for their summit fame leading clueless people on a pointless journey. Why didn’t they protest before the Summit? The US dignitaries and others have already conjured up images of them as Drug Pushers, Bandits, Murders and Kidnappers. Protesting now will not change internationals minds. International countries are warning their citizen about the elements they would encounter in their visit to Trinidad and Tobago and advise against traveling. So, tell these people a one or 2 day protest doesn’t help their cause. Protest about PM doing, Protest about the Minister of Finance doing. Start protesting to the your government before you set forth on the International stage.

I agree with you but that

I agree with you but that still does not give police the right to stop them

These people have been

These people have been protesting for years now about the smelters in Chatham and elsewhere. Where were you? Did you not know about these protests? Surely you should keep yourself more updated on affairs in Trinidad before you make such silly comments.
