Manning stands alone...

A summit in shambles

The Fifth Summit of the Americas has come and gone, and after all the pomp and ceremony, delegates and foreign journalists have come to one conclusion: it has been a mess. After going to five Latin American countries, earlier this month, to whip up support, Prime Minister Patrick Manning was the only leader to sign yesterday the document, the Declaration of Port-of-Spain.

At the end of the Summit retreat at the Diplomatic Centre yesterday, Manning described it as a “compromised” document which met the approbation of only some delegates. The T&T Prime Minister added: “Therefore, what we agreed to do today is to adopt the document. And in adopting it, we are recognising that there was not unanimity, even though there was, indeed, consensus on this very important matter.” Manning said the leaders agreed that he, as chairman of the conference, should sign the document, “which is a task that I was very pleased to carry out.”

No other leader signed the declaration. The signing was expected to be one of the highlights of the historic summit. The document outlined a hemispheric agenda which included human development and environmental sustainability. Before the summit, several leaders, including Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, stated that he would not have signed the declaration, in protest of Cuba’s exclusion from the Summit. At the end of the retreat yesterday, there was supposed to have been a final photo session of all the leaders. One photo session was carried out successfully on Saturday at the Hyatt Regency. Yesterday’s session did not come off.

Several leaders took their places on the front step of the Diplomatic Centre, in front of their name tags. But US President Barack Obama could not stay. He was hosting a news conference at the Hilton Hotel; Bolivian President Evo Morales had already gone to Piarco Airport, and Chavez could not be found. Leaders simply left and headed for the airport. Another issue was accreditation. Residents of areas within the zones—red, yellow and blue—were never able to access the passes promised to them to leave and return to their homes. Some had to take chances leaving their homes, and depended on the kindness of security officers.

Journalists and business owners in Port-of-Spain were left empty-handed, not being able to get their car passes to come to work in the yellow zone. There was chaos outside the Hyatt Regency on Friday afternoon, when Chavez arrived for the opening ceremony. Curious onlookers rushed with journalists to speak with Chavez as he emerged from his car. Security officials were unable to control the mob which lunged at the Venezuelan leader. From very early, the Summit organisers decided that pool reporting and photography was the best way for journalists to cover the three-day summit. But even before it began, problems arose over the small number of journalists being accommodated at any one event.

On Saturday, a fight broke out between journalists and security officials at the Hyatt. The summit organisers quickly cancelled all photo opportunities and pool gatherings for that day. On Friday, a fight broke out between a security officer assigned to Argentine President Cristina de Kirchner, and a Special Branch officer at Piarco International Airport. The T&T Guardian learnt that the local security officer was directing where the visiting delegation should go. One of the visiting security officers did not like it and a clash took place. The Summit Secretariat issued a news release and an investigation is under way.

Although the 'Summit'

Although the 'Summit' appears to have resulted in very little being immediately accomplished, despite the outrageous expense and personal sacrifice incured by Trinidadians through the sponsoring of this event, we should be aware that this is not unusual as summits goes, as much is accomplished after the fact. However, as a Trinidadian residing in the USA, I felt very proud every time Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, was mentioned on the various television channels an newspapers. Maybe I am being selfish, but it sure felt good to be a 'Trini'

A reporter saying that he or

A reporter saying that he or she was reporting from Port of Spain, Trinidad with only the sky as the background did not make me feel as proud as you, I'm sorry

Ah wonder how Manning going

Ah wonder how Manning going to explain this, maybe he will say it is not true and the writer better beware

Again, a summit of this

Again, a summit of this magnitude was held in Trinidad. This offered a window of opportunities for Trinidad - and Manning- had the foresight to attempt such a great feat. All the people of Trinidad are forcusing on is how he spent so much money to produce this event. What shortsightedness. It seems that it's only tunnel vision being shown here. Look at the long term efects and stop being so negative. There is no, no utopia in this world. Trinidad and Tobago is no different from any other develop or developing country: Crimes, drugs, prostitution, and kidnapping it's all over the world. Those trinidadians who are only complaining for complaining sake: go find that utopia, go back to your respective countries to live or begin preparing to migrate to another planet. There is no utopic in this world.

Once again our country was

Once again our country was placed in the spotlight, not to the approval of many and once again our Prime Minister has put us to shame. Despite all the rushed preparations which anyone could see would not have been completed, our government sought to spend millions upon millions of our precious reserves on trying to impress the world. As could be seen on international media, no one believes that there was any professionalism shown. Summit has gone. Now what? How many more must face the breadline? There are only so many roadsides to clean. CEPEPP is already overstaffed. What have you left for the people of your country Mr. Manning? A half completed burm stained by the blood of your people. Wake up, it is time for you to tighten your belt! I await to see the glorious benefits of this lovely Summit.

What silly thinking! What

What silly thinking! What does the Summit have to do with what's going on in the country. The time to deal with that is in the polling booth. When the eyes of the world are on Trinidad and Tobago the headline on this newspaper is ridiculous. Shame on you GUARDIAN!! Yes it is good to hear the reporters talk about Trinidad it erases from our minds the constant killing and crimes that constantly make headlines. For once it makes those of us who look on at a distance forget the shame. The minor costs of this Summit does not compare to the benefits of Tourism and goodwill that has been generated across the world for years to come. Barack Obama's presence alone should have given a clue that at least it was time to look at the world as adults. Stop the reveling, drinking and constant partying that you insist on exporting as "our culture" and work constructively for political change!! GROW UP!!! The eyes of the world are on you.

I quote from the Express

I quote from the Express -
"Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez yesterday joined the voices praising the outcome of the Fifth Summit of the Americas, labelling the Port of Spain event "a total success."
Someone certainly has an axe to grind! Clearly no research for comparison has been done for the usual protocols when it comes to signing any Declaration for these meetings. Also look at who signs at CARICOM meetings (if at all they do) and whether they ever implement what is agreed as signed.

The news on Canadian TV and

The news on Canadian TV and on the US networks is about how great the Summit was, especially compared to the last one--which was a debacle because of a clash between Chavez and Bush. The Caribbean leaders are being praised as skillful intermediaries between the U.S. and the left wing governments in Venezuela, Nicaragua and Ecuador. But Trinis are not satisfied, and all you like to do is ask about how much aid you got from Obama and how much Manning has wasted. As usual, West Indians are incapable of honoring their own.

As a previous commentator

As a previous commentator said someone obviously has an act to grind.
It is reporting as this that places the press in disrepute and why I am very wary of accepting what the press reports. When Hugo Chavez, a man noted for being outspoken can say that this was the most successful summit he has attended, I wonder what is the agenda of this reporter.
I have often expressed the view that the some of our local reporting is the most striking indictment of the quality of our education system.

The President of the United

The President of the United States said the Summit was a success. Why can't you naysayers keep your negatism to yourself? This is about country not politics. What, you think there is no poverty in the US or any of the other countries that were in the Summit. I commend Mr. Manning and everyone that was involved in putting the Summit together. I am proud of my country and to the naysayers get a life.

I can bet that you are a

I can bet that you are a trini not living in T&T and that is why you are so proud but I guess if you or any of your relatives were murdered, kidnapped, robbed, raped or had to go to any public hospital and made to die on the floor like an animal then you wouldn't be so proud, would you. We as Trinbagonanians all want to be proud of our country but not under falsehood, deceit and lies.

I am not living in Trinidad

I am not living in Trinidad but the rest of my family lives there and there is crime wherever you go not just Trinidad and yes I am and will always be proud of my country crime and all. What, you think it is any different outside of Trinidad just ask the reporter from the Express Newspaper who was in NY some months ago.

I would have won the bet.

I would have won the bet. The problem with Trinidad is not the crimes, is the not solving of crimes, the cover ups for the criminals committing these crimes, yes I agree that there is crime worldwide but compare the our statistics to that of other countries, some of them 2 and 3 times our size, I have no idea why people always use that same phrase as an excuse as to the amount of crime taking place in T&T, like it's ok it happens everywhere, unless it touches you personally then it's a different story.

Let's not be confused. I

Let's not be confused. I believe there is a DISTINCT DIFFERENCE between being 'PROUD' of your nationality/ country of birth, and agreeing with the politics, actions, or opinion of the countries leader(s). I have resided in the USA for 38 years and have been a US citizen for 15 years. I have been a victim of crime in both countries, as have been my relatives in Trinidad. I do not always agree with the politics of either T&T or USA. But that's the beauty of democracy:I can choose to be who I am, or what I prefer. That being said, I am, and will always be proud when I hear the words Trinidad & Tobago mentioned. I had no choice as to where I was born, I simply accept that it was my destiny.

Well said. I totally agree.

Well said. I totally agree.

The summit has come and gone

The summit has come and gone but the infrastructure required to host it, is paid for and still remain and will be useful to Trinidad. Because Trinidad pulled off this summit, I believe the country could now go out and attract large conventions which are job creating and money making. Bravo Trinidad !!
Ricky

I will admit after

I will admit after everything I read and saw that this headline and artcle threw me for a loop. Since I not sure exactly what 'in shambles' means I will ask one question and make a couple comments.

If this summit was held in another country, say the USA and an American security official got into confrontations with a security person from another country's delegation, if the press mobbed one of the heads of state, if there was no agreement among the delegates so no declaration was signed at the end of the summit except by the American leader, if there was bacchanal during the accreditation process, would the reporter have described it as 'summit in shambles'?

I give no credence to anonymous sources used to bolster an argument as that smacks of 'children in containers' reporting. Why not get the names of those delegates and foreign reporters who said the summit 'was a mess' and use them in the article?

Nothing but bacchanalian reporting that at its worst is self hate and at its best does nothing but reinforces the opinion of those who find absolutely nothing about T&T of which to be proud. Why they tend to be Trinis I don't know.

The things with which I think valid arguments can be made are: the cost; the accreditation dotishness; the actions by the police in St. James and the failure to have the group picture at the end of the summit.

I have read people complaining that the police should have allowed protesters and that in Europe the English police had 'allowed' protesters at the G20 conference. Where do these people get their news? There were criminal acts committed during the English demonstrations and an English cop is under investigation in the death of an innocent man caught up in the demonstation.

By the way, I hope the Special Branch officer kicked the Argentine's behind. Both times.

Shouldn't there have been a

Shouldn't there have been a level of consensus before everyone came together to sign the document? That is a main feature of the whole exercise. Even when leaders have signed in the past they have not held true to their word. It's much worse now that they have not signed at all... It was still a good handshaking exercise. but a truly expensive one.

First, let me congratulate

First, let me congratulate T&T for a safe summit but I also feel that the reporting left much to be desired ..very little was mentioned of the country, Pres. Obama was shown was a little skyline behind him, with the reporter based in Washington..and one US TV station misspelt Trinidad!! So....not much to be proud of however, I have to say the Spanish TV stations did a much nicer job.

The Trinidad Guardian has

The Trinidad Guardian has lost all its credability. There was a reporter from this newspaper who was standing right next to me, when evo morales the president of bolivia came out, one of their reporters asked me if that was Hugo Chavez of Venezuela. What a pile of nonesense does this newspaper have anyone that can do their job properly, i was shocked that i had to correct them.

On the other note. the summit was not a shambles i reported on the summit alongside the world media and the overall conclusion was not that wed all felt it ended up in a mess. This is a clear attempt to cause division in our country, why don't you ever report the truth for once in your life. I urge all readers of the guardian to not give them the benefit of the doubt, because for too long thay have been telling you lies and not doing their job properly.

before they went and printed this blatant lie that thew reporters felt it ended in a mess, maybe they should try reading their reports, looking at international news and paying attention to detail. but you guys do not pay attention, you knew absolutely nothing and the standard of reporting in general was so poor it was embarrasing. Newsday did a better job of reporting, they actually stood by fact and did not bother to make up any stories.

Just remember your paper and organisation gets more respect, when it engages in honesty and intevgrity. Just remember that, the Guardian sucks!!!! BIG TIME & Francis Joseph the write of this article should be ashamed of himself
A place where ordinary citizens have a voice! http://speakouttnt.com/

Maybe those of you praising

Maybe those of you praising this event should talk to people who worked to coordinate this event to get the true story of wastasge, lack of accountability, egos, arrogance, incompetence and poor management! Of people partying, orgy fashion on the two cruise ships, who had no business with the Summit but who had a paid "cruise" and freeness galore. The deplorabale sight of government officials tripping over themselves to "meet Barack" an dto hell with protocol and courtesy. Talk to all the local Ambassadors of the fiasco. If we are to organise the next event, the CHOGM, PM Manning has to "clean out the stables" of those arrogant oragnisers and put people with a track record, of high standing and who command respect to organise for the Commonwealth. If this one with 34 leader is such a mess, wait till November!! Prime Minister and Mariano, take note!

If the guardian sucks then

If the guardian sucks then why bother reading itand according to Newsday, the paper that you said had better reporting, the summit was not a shambles it "was plagued by disorganisation". Isn't that the same thing said using different words ? Even the foreign media did no amount of reporting, with one station repoting how rude it was that Manning, Pm of the host country, did not go to meet Obama at the airport.....but all in all whether the summit was a shambles, plagued with disorganisation or otherwise the T&T public has nothing to gain, so duuhhh

Absolute nonsense.. your

Absolute nonsense.. your talking out of your backside
A place where ordinary citizens have a voice! http://speakouttnt.com/

The fact is that 34 World

The fact is that 34 World leaders came together in sweet TNT and they discussed many things including having constructive dialogue with Cuba and forging a New Beginning. Mr. Manning should be congratulated because he like Dr. William is always putting TNT in a positive spotlight. He did not steal the money and put it in his foreign bank account. This is money well spent, because the seeds that were sowed over the weekend will bear bountiful fruits.

Francis Joseph need to appreciate the efforts made by Prime Minister Manning and report the facts, because hosting a meeting of this magnitude is not an easy task and several world leader stated that the meeting was a success.

Only those who have

Only those who have travelled and spent time abroad will value their country, our people complain about every thing, but they will never get the fact that the world out there only glitters, our people are wonderful compared to the rest, and what ever negative we have at home in our country it is much worse out there.
Mr Manning made an effort that should be rewarded, other third world countries could never accomplish what our country in terms of education and skills, in terms of survival on the whole has done, and one thing must be rewarded about our people is because of our trials and tribulations at home we can survive antwhere.
So stop complaining and see the positve, because you never miss the water till the well run dry.

Man, you guys have it in for

Man, you guys have it in for out PM.
Well, as far as I am concerned, he is the Greatest!
I frankly believe that he has more brains than any US President, dead or alive, including Obama.
There is no leader alive today who has the 20/20 vision and intelligence that our beloved PM has.
He is a genius - Look where he has put the country!
And to top it off, he has the country on a clear path to progress, prosperity and equality.
Just to name a few of his accomplishments: Every house has running water in its taps, there is electricity everywhere, the roads are beautifully paved, the hospitals are well equipped and well staffed and are second to none, the schools are models to be admired, crime is virtually non-existent and there is absolutely no corruption.
All Hail the Chief!

I fully agree with the

I fully agree with the previous writer.
Trinidad and Tobago is a First World state.
We are well on the path to Vision 2020.
We will be the envy of the entire World, when Mr. Manning completes his mission.
This man and his dear wife deserve to be blessed with Immortality.
This is a man of the World who is so transparent, honest and open minded that he welcomes foreigners to do the jobs that locals cannot do. Just look at the work that Calder Hart does - his five executive salaries are not enough to compensate for his enormous contribution to the country's development.
It is true that our PM did not put any money into any foreign bank account. The home that he has in Germany and the scholarships that his sons got from foreign suppliers were earned by hard work and sweat.
So all you Trinis who have axes to grind or sour grapes to suck, just watch our boy at work and you will see the greatness in time.

Mr. Manning is a great soul

Mr. Manning is a great soul - in the realm of Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.
He is the saviour of T & T and the envy of other World leaders.
This man deserves a place at the right hand of God.
Bless you, our noble son of the soil.

He doesn't deserve a place

He doesn't deserve a place at the right hand of God, he thinks he is GOD

"welcomes foreigners to do

"welcomes foreigners to do the jobs that locals cannot do"
you said it all, there is no qualified or capable people in tt to work?
is this a result of poor education, a lazy culture, or a graft requirement to perform?
if we are on the way to vision 2020, the pm need to get his head out of the oilsand. seems to me it should be vision 2200.
what scholarship?
the one that is offered annually to deserving students, or just
a one time thing to manning's dependents? this does not pass the sniff test, please.

At least somebody know what

At least somebody know what going on in T&T.

Well said, Mr. Joseph.

Well said, Mr. Joseph.

All I would like to know is,

All I would like to know is, what are the benefits we can expect from this Summit and when?

Mr.Manning also promised that "deals will be made at the Summit that will benefit us." What deals were made that will benefit us?

I won't hold my breath though.

We were made similar promises for the Ms.Universe and our foray into the world cup, what did those events, which were both bigger than the Fifth Summit do for us?

Instead of ranting and raving here, lets discuss things rationally and realistically.

Have a look at the link below describing what we were promised from the world cup, you be the judge now.

Hold on one second. I

Hold on one second. I attended the summit and am also emphasizing the sheer lack of knowledge these reporters have, its almost as though they have no idea whats going on. Its the fault of their own because they do not investigate.. but then again its people like yourself who stand poor abhorrent journalism, you like that don't you.. oh yeah i forgot.. well as far as i am concerned i want to read a newspaper that is committed to balance, honesty and integrity. everything must be analyzed fairly.

And yuh still reading the

And yuh still reading the Guardian, it's people like you who say one thing and do another that have T&T where it is today.

obeahwoman.. I do wish to

obeahwoman.. I do wish to apologize. Reading this over did make me feel regretful, as i could see how sudden and out of the blue it was. Just as anyone you should be able to express your opinion without being disrespected. I should know better, since this is the very thing i talk about. I wish to retract all the disrespectful remarks that i have uttered and move apace from here. Once again I do apologize to you, it was unecessary and uncalled for.
