President Obama meets 'Michael Jordan of cricket'
Former West Indies cricket captain and batting icon Brian Lara said yesterday it was on the invitation of the White House that he met with United States President Barack Obama on Sunday, closing day of the Fifth Summit of the Americas.
Lara met with the president minutes after he hosted a news conference at the Hilton Hotel, and sources say Obama described the batting icon as the Michael Jordan of cricket. “I always wanted to meet the Michael Jordan of cricket,” is how president Obama is reported to have greeted Lara, who was accompanied by his 12-year-old daughter, Sydney, and TSTT’s Lisa Agard.
Lara gave the President some batting tips and took photographs before presenting him with a personally-autographed bat which read: “To the President of the United States, Barack Obama, in appreciation of your visit to T&T —Best Wishes” Contacted last night, Lara described the meeting as a great honour. “Even my daughter, at the tender age of 12 years, understood the importance of the man and the moment, refusing to wash her hands for the rest of the day.”
Lara said he listened to the President speaking at the news conference, and was impressed. “He struck me as a man of great vision, but yet a man of humble appreciation and tremendous responsibility. Despite these responsibilities, he seems to have a great liking for sport, and we both enjoyed our short time together.” The world’s multiple batting record-holder was noticeably absent from major activities, including the opening ceremony of the summit, and sources claimed that his presence may have overshadowed government officials.
However, while addressing heads and their spouses at a dinner at the Diplomatic Centre on Saturday, Prime Minister Patrick Manning boasted about the achievements of Trinidad and Tobago, including Lara’s breaking of the record for the highest individual Test score on two occasions.
Why do you have to refer to
Why do you have to refer to Brian Lara as the Michael Jordan of cricket? We should be able to use the name Brian Lara by itself, not look for support from another sports hero. Think about it you will never read the reverse. Brian Lara is Brian Lara of Cricket.
A Trinbagonian National
A Trinbagonian National Icon, who has worked his way up to get his name known throughout the world, and you refer to him as the Michael Jordon of cricket.
He is the Brian Lara of cricket and should not be referred to as anything else.
Just because its an american president, you don't have to link it with an american sports icon. hes in T&T and hes with our national cricket icon. so just stop your nonsense NOW!
Gosh, I thought that the
Gosh, I thought that the Guardian was reporting only what Obama said. What is wrong with that.
I agree that Brian Lara is Brian Lara of cricket, but If he can use this term, putting Brian Lara in the same sporting bracket with Micheal Jordan, what is wrong with that.
I wonder if it was manning who had referred to MJ as the Brian Lara of basketball would you have been offended?
Man you are to thin Skinned.
You would swear that the
You would swear that the President of the United States called Brian Lara an obscene word. Michael Jordan, happens to be one of the most richest, most acclaimed, well respected and liked, of any sport in the US. Brian has his life's challenges just as Michael does and we as Trini's find nothing wrong with him. We love our icon, so what is wrong with President Obama, talking about someone he likes and respects and comparing him to someone else. Find something positive to say and move on to more pressing subjects; Like how, " Mr Warner refuses to attend any events because he wasn't invited in time." Grow up people and stop having the world look at us as fools, just like they think our country is so ridden with, "Murders.."
I wrote no such thing.. so
I wrote no such thing.. so why is my name on this comment. I am very concerned about that, which is why i have flagged the comment to be removed.
What the people of Trinidad
What the people of Trinidad and Tobago need to learn how to do is READ and INTERPRET!!! The PRESIDENT of the United stated stated HE wanted to meet the Michael Jordan of Cricket.. The Guardian did not dub Brian lara "The Micheal Jordan of Cricket".. it was Barack himself.. so the Guardian is simply doing its job by reporting what was said.. I mean seriously.. how hard is that?
The Guardian article is
The Guardian article is clear. Mr Obama "IS REPORTED" as saying he wanted to meet the Michael Jordan of cricket. Its obvious the Guardian is going on hear say, they are not sure if Mr Obama did make the statement. Read the article again. "IS REPORTED". How clear is that.
Hi, Team selection for
Hi,
Team selection for this match was surprising as England decided to leave out Dimitri Mascarenhas and play Adil Rashid instead. This is not the first time that Mascarenhas has been omitted and those lessons have still not sunk in. The all rounder should be one of the first names on the team sheet when it comes to Twenty20 cricket. The fact England is without Flintoff makes the decision to leave him out even more mystifying.
