The El Socorro Taxi Drivers' Association is calling on Works and Transport Minister Colm Imbert and WASA to repair the deplorable pot holes on the northern side of the El Socorro junction.
Members of the association said the deplorable condition of the road has forced them to make illegal drives in order to prevent damage to their cars and also to cross the Churchill Roosevelt Highway. Taxi driver Gopaul Bhola said WASA had attempted to fix the pothole four times before discovering that the reason for the damage was a ruptured water main that runs across both lanes.
"Right now WASA and Mr Imbert need to step up, but instead they are stepping down," said Bhola at the El Socorro taxi stand. "All of us taxi drivers depend on that piece of road to cross the highway. I am hoping this protest will draw attention to the terrible state of the road. We will continue to protest until something is done," he said.
A representative from WASA said the authority was aware of the problem and had now determined the cause of the leak was further up the highway. "However, we understand that the situation is dire and therefore we have decided to proceed with the repairs," he said. WASA will be working on the highway this Sunday in response to the taxi drivers' pleas.
