East-West corridor hit hard
Chairman of the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation Patricia Mejias says it will take about a week and a half to ascertain the full extent and cost of the damage caused by the flooding along the East-West Corridor on “Manic Monday.” She also said man-made factors contributed significantly to the flooding.
Mejias, Local Government Minister Hazel Manning, Permanent Secretary Cheryl Blackman and engineers from the corporation went out on the field yesterday. “Flooding is an act of God,” Mejias said. “I couldn’t believe the amount of water...It happened in about 40 to 45 minutes. The whole of the Eastern Main Road was flooded out, including all the businesses...There was a lot of damage.” Meanwhile, mopping up operations are in full swing. “We have begun washing and cleaning some peoples’ homes and clearing the streets...Cepep is assisting and the field workers are doing assessment,” Mejias said.
Most affected areas
She said Watts, Belle Smythe Streets and Jogie Trace in Curepe were completely flooded. At St Augustine, Dookiesingh Street, Freeman Road and River Road were completely covered in slush and debris. “The whole of Spring Village was in a bad way...The cars had to be towed away,” Mejias said. “Two vehicles blew up and burned to nothing in a St Augustine car park. Trees fell into the river by Evans Street, Curepe. A house on Sesame Street was badly damaged. Bridges and retaining walls fell down,” Mejias said. Yesterday, the waters had abated but the slush remained. Spring Village bore testimony to nature’s fury. “Mc Inroy Street was completely flooded out,” she said.
“Blackman Ravine goes straight into Spring Village. It overflowed its banks. It spilled over those areas.” Mejias said she was noticing a trend caused by dumping of discarded material. “I think if rain falls again it would happen, because of activities like the cutting of the hill,” she said. “The burgesses are dumping their garbage in the watercourses. Most of the problems are man-made.”
On June 8, Councillor Khadijah Ameen-Rostant and a number of residents had appealed to the authorities to dredge Blackman Ravine before the rains came.
More to come
Meteorologist Ezekiel Sampson says the bout of convective rainfall which unleashed flooding along the East-West Corridor could repeat itself before the end of the week. “We can expect some thundershowers, particularly over the course of the next few days, especially Thursday and Friday,” he said. He explained the sudden thundershower was the result of a “lax wind field in the easterly trade winds”. He described the downpour as convective rainfall.
“Convective type rainfall will wake you up...The rain will put you to sleep,” he said.
Need help?
The Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation has asked that citizens who have been affected by flooding and need assistance to call the corporation at 645-8772, 633-6750, 662-2261, 662-4139 or 662-1422.
This is an open warning to
This is an open warning to all those parents, guardians, relatives, wellwishers, advisors, friends of students and students themselves that one should drive through Curepe, Pasea, St Augustine including over the highway (Freeman Road etc) and Tunapuna to see where the floods affected.
You see my dear friends, landlords and landladies often adulterate the truth (lie) and say that their apartments they have to offer to rent are not prone to flooding.
The average accommodation is $2500 unfurnished and one has in addition the utilities to pay
With this recession it is not easy to lose one's posssesions and these landlords/landladies care only about the rent
So if you are flooded out and have lost everything and are inconvenienced they would still appear like vulture for the rent
Upstairs is good to rent but remember you may still have to walk through faeces to get home
In addition can the campuses of the various schools advise students to check their contracts before signing
A lot of the contracts are null and void in the court of TT but unsuspecting students are often expelled from their premises according to the whim and fancy of the landlords/landladies
So True, a lot of the
So True, a lot of the premises aren't even suitable for renting
“Flooding is an act of
“Flooding is an act of God,” Mejias said.
God should start punishing people who make these statements. The only time I think that this was true was in Noah's time. God has given us the sense to plan and to prepare. Ms Mejias, do you now work for an Insurance company or what? Its one of the very few places that can charge you a fee to insure you against "An act of God". I don't think that even religious leaders have that authority. Lord Help Us!!!
Apparently, poor Healthcare
Apparently, poor Healthcare is also an act of God, the guns and drugs found at the St Joseph Police Station are an act of God. Give me a break! We really get the representatives we deserve. For years I have begged for Patricia Mejias to be rejected by her councillors because of her poor representation, In Bamboo #2 our drains have not been cleaned in years but she blames God ? A businessman built his wall 3 feet from the river bank, how is a backhoe or excavator to work to fix the bank or dredge the St Joseph river because of this ? Dozens of Businesses have built their offices and garages nearly on the road, what has Mejias done ? Recently certain areas were marked off for pavements and drains, all of a sudden, work stopped, why ? Patricia Mejias is a blatant failure. Remember it is through the Regional Corporation that we now have to pay $5.oo to urinate is a chrome toilet in Curepe Junction. Ask what is the price for this contraption?
This Corporation must be audited forthwith.

The PNM government must also be an act of GOD....ent Ms Mejias.
What Meijas should have said
What Meijas should have said was "Flooding is the inaction of man". Flooding is an annual destructive event. Every year households and businesses have to reallocate resources from expanding their asset base to repairing their properties. It causes food prices to rise, destroys infastructure plus it causes a temporary decline in the production of goods and services. In my opinion a flooding-free T&T would have done more to improve the quality of people's lives, than the government buildings erected in POS.
