Panday calls for probe into gun find at police station

Leader of the Opposition Basdeo Panday has called for a public probe into the discovery of illegal guns, drugs and ammunition at the St Joseph Police Station over the weekend.
He blamed Government and National Security Minister Martin Joseph for the problem as they failed to establish a consistent work ethic to prevent corruption in the Police Service. In a release yesterday, Panday stated that in late 2007 Supt Chandrabhan Maharaj, then attached to the Southern Police Division, made serious allegations of corruption in the Service. Panday noted that although there is a manifestation of Maharaj’s accusations nothing has been done to uproot rogue elements out of the Service.
“With millions being spent to uplift the Police Service, the PNM Government is yet to make any headway on cracking into the partnership between rogue police officers and gangs,” Panday said. “Citizens have lost faith in the Police Service, they have implemented self-imposed curfews and they are migrating in droves to other lands to keep their families safe while the Government plays with their lives,” he said.

This unfolding drama is getting scarier by the minute. Is it possible for our hard working Minister of National Security and Acting Police Commissioner to wake up?

But Mr Bas, let them also explain how so much guns come to the hands of the Jamaat circa 1990, how one police issue firearm was allegedly rented out to a bandit who shot an Oropouche South Trinidad businessman over 10 years ago; how one leave the Arouca (?) station and kill the young Maharaj boy quite in Santa Flora South Trinidad; how a sophisticated SLR reportedly went missing from the army a few years ago and an underwold figure allegedly helped them recover it in East Trinidad; how so many security guards getting hold up and their guns taken away and nobody tightening up regulations; if guns come from Grenada after the overthrow of the Maurice Bishop regime; how and if so much guns and coke come in to TT in fish belly from down the 'Main' (Venezuela Orinoco River and delta); how firearms lodged in the San Fernando Station by some private gun owners could disappear; how so much ah youthman mainly in the East West Corridor getting kill by gun, some even get kill while 'playing' with a gun (what ah gun doing in they house?). Ad nauseum. These are not just rumours, Mr Bas.

I do not condone what Mr. Panday did nor will I ever support it, however, just because one (ex) leader has a case against him and the other (current) is hiding his "thieving" ways well, should we just attack Mr. Panday and NEVER question Mr. Manning's agenda? Corruption is everywhere, in every government, past and present..so maybe its time we put them all on one level and treat them accordingly and make them ALL accountable.
