It was ju­bi­la­tion and sor­row in south Trinidad yes­ter­day as stu­dents re­ceived their Caribbean Ex­am­i­na­tion Coun­cil (CXC) re­sults. Anx­ious­ly await­ing their ex­am­i­na­tion slips, stu­dents be­gan gath­er­ing at their re­spec­tive schools, some ac­com­pa­nied by their par­ents as ear­ly as 7 am. Some stu­dents in tears, oth­ers elat­ed, hugged and com­fort­ed each oth­er as they re­ceived their re­sults. Prin­ci­pals were gen­er­al­ly pleased with the re­sults.

How­ev­er, con­cerns were raised over the de­cline in ge­og­ra­phy pass­es.

Vice-prin­ci­pal of Na­pari­ma Girls' High Fairy Lal­la said the school re­ceived a 98 per cent pass rate with stu­dents re­ceiv­ing full cer­tifi­cates in grades one, two and three. Prin­ci­pal of Holy Faith Con­vent, Pe­nal, Mar­i­lyn Browne al­so said her school re­ceived a high pass rate. The boys of As­ja Col­lege re­ceived high prais­es from prin­ci­pal Al­im Ali. Ali said he was proud of his stu­dents who con­tin­ued to main­tain the 80 per cent pass rate.

Prin­ci­pal of As­ja Girls' Yasim Ra­hamats­ingh al­so echoed sim­i­lar sen­ti­ments, say­ing that her stu­dents re­ceived full cer­tifi­cates.

Pre­sen­ta­tion Col­lege in San Fer­nan­do al­so re­ceived a 100 per cent pass rate. At Iere High School, prin­ci­pal Roy Ram­lo­gan said he was ex­treme­ly pleased with the CXC re­sults, es­pe­cial­ly in sci­ence.

Di­rec­tor of North Gate Col­lege in St Au­gus­tine, Ce­cile Tay­lor, said the pri­vate in­sti­tu­tion re­ceived a 91 per cent pass rate in Eng­lish A, 85 per cent in Maths and 100 per cent in So­cial Stud­ies.
