Around 300 residents of Caroni were hit by heavy floods yesterday. Well-known trade unionist, Rudy Indarsingh, a resident of Gandhi Street, said flood waters started rising around midnight, and hit severely parts of the north-western end of the community.

Indarsingh said he was worried about the after-effects such as vermin brought up by the flood water, and the overflow of sewage from cesspits and latrines onto the roadways and yards of residents.

Ganesh Madoo, another resident, said he was disgusted and fed up, and that apart from the floods, a restaurant in the area was responsible for dumping garbage on the roadways. Shama Deonarine, the local government representative, on Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation, said she and chairman Patricia Meijas visited the affected area.

Deonarine said the corporation planned to send workers to sanitise the area as soon as the flood water subsided. Also, work to alleviate flooding in the area was ongoing, but she believed the problem might have arisen because of a faulty sluice gate.
