Jizelle Salandy

Jizelle Salandy was the lone recipient of this country’s highest award in the 2009 Independence Day honours, presided over last night by President George Richards. Salandy was awarded the Order of Trinidad and Tobago for distinguished and outstanding national service in the field of boxing. The award was presented posthumously. Salandy died at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital on January 4, after the car she was driving crashed into a concrete pillar near the National Petroleum overpass on Beetham Highway. She was 21 years old. This country’s most successful female boxer, Salandy had eight world titles under her belt, including the World Boxing Council (WBC), the World Boxing Association (WBA) and the Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) titles.

She was the recipient of the country’s second highest award—the Chaconia Medal (Gold) in August 2007. After her death, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Gary Hunt described Salandy as an icon, a great contributor and a motivator. Among the other 20 recipients of national awards this year were Dr Geraldine Connor, ethnomusicologist, Ambassador Dr Cuthbert Joseph and fashion designer Heather Jones. They received the Chaconia Medal (Gold). The Chaconia Medal (Silver) was awarded to medical doctors George Laquis and Ronald Henry, in the field of medicine, Fr Steve West (education), and community worker Gowriedath Hanooman (posthumously) for gallantry.

Recipients of the Humming Bird Medal (Gold) were businessman Narine Gupte Lutchmedial for community service, pannist Len “Boogsie” Sharpe for culture and Dianne Avalone Baptiste, a housewife, for gallantry. After months the President

After months the President still struggling to appoint an Integrity Commission.

He's afraid to stand in the sun to salute the troops on Independence day, but loves the sun for Carnival.

The best being President Noor Hassanali off course!

And manning should get the

And manning should get the Mokojumbee awared for jumbieing the people with lies, fraud and do not forget, he is prime minister for only one section of the people, check the records before you critacise. I agree, Noor was the greatest of all, when you look at the life that man lived, humility, honesty and he kept the president house free from spirits, yes, he was a fine example of a superb life.

I am very disappointed with

I am very disappointed with the racial mix of awardees with a country of almost equal amount of indians and africians. But I guess, I will be considered racist for talking about this. The PM can practise it, but when you speak about it, you're racist.

Rennie you are not a racist

Rennie you are not a racist for saying what you have said, because I agree with you 100% but I think we are just not seeing the facts, which is that Indo Trinis are not as accomplished or deserving of as much as Afro Trinis....medals, houses, jobs etc. Oh, Oh I just jump on the racist bandwagon with you.

Tell me... I am Afro

Tell me... I am Afro Trinidadian - how do I get a house, job or even a scholarship from the government? (I came 1st in my MSc degree programme but have been blanked twice already for a scholarship since then while 2 Indo Trinidadians who did the same degree I did got scholarships) Some people write as though its so easy and those things are being given away because of your race! No doubt I have the qualifications AND experience for the jobs I applied for but after being offered a position I interviewed for with referees checked out and everything I am called 1 year later and asked to re-apply!

Happy 47th Independence Day

Happy 47th Independence Day to the Government and good people of Trinidad & Tobago . To my fellow bloggers , bajans and trinbagonions are ONE FAMILY ; therefore , your business is my business and my business is your business . One Love .

As much as I would like to

As much as I would like to see Indians also receive awards, I believe people must also earn it and not just by colour of skin.
So whether being Afro-Trini or Indo Trini we must award these medals to people who really deserve it.

Put the shoe on the other

Put the shoe on the other foot, and you will hear most Afro Trinis claiming racisim if there were more Indians, Chinese, mixed or Whites getting awards.

Trinidad is still in many ways, a racist country all thanks to the PNM party.

IMAGINE A WOMAN GET AN AWARD

IMAGINE A WOMAN GET AN AWARD FOR FIGHTING OFF A BANDIT. THAT IS THE DUMBEST THING I EVER SAW. IF THIS IS THE PRECIDENT, THERE WAS A BUSINESSMAN IN POS A FEW YEARS AGO WHO KILLED TWO BANDITS WITH HIS GLOCK, HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE TRINITY CROSS. AS FAR AS I CAN SEE, IT'S JUST PAYBACK FOR PARTY SUPPORTERS, JUST LIKE HOW CEPEP CONTRACTS WERE GIVEN OUT WITHOUT ANY ADVERTISEMENT. I DONT CARE FOR AWARDS, BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY, YOU CANT BUY GROCERIES WITH IT. BUT IT'S A PRINCIPLED THING.

I totally agree with the

I totally agree with the last post!

You want to tell me that there are not people out there, ordinary citizens who deserve to be noticed and given an award?

Awards flying left, right and centre for real chupidness.

There also needs to be a broader section of the people when they giving awards.

No offense to those of African descent, but there are other races in TnT.
