Soldier accused of beating policewoman
A soldier assigned to Teteron Barracks was arrested by police after he allegedly physically assaulted a woman police constable during a road traffic accident in Maraval on Saturday night. The army man, who lives in Maracas St Joseph, was taken into custody by officers of the North Eastern Division Task Force after he crashed his vehicle moments after fleeing the scene of an accident.
According to police, the incident occurred shortly before 10 pm on Saturday night. It is reported that the soldier was driving his car out of Maracas Bay when it collided with the WPC’s vehicle. Both drivers emerged from their vehicles and an argument ensued, police said. It is alleged the soldier slapped the WPC several times across the face and pushed her to the ground.
He later jumped into his vehicle and attempted to flee the scene. The soldier, however, lost control of the vehicle which crashed a short distance away. He was arrested by task force officers who took him to the Maraval Police Station. He has since been released, pending further inquiries, police said.
Well at least all the
Well at least all the miscreants are showing their true colours so they can be easily identified and kicked out. Soldiers showing absolutely no respect for law by supposedly slapping police officers? Police officers showing no respect for the law they are sworn to uphold and supposedly getting caught stuffing money in dey drawers? How much more worse is this going to get before it starts getting better? How much longer did Martin Joseph say the people have to wait before real changes start?
Steups.
On a non related front, what happen Guardian that the online edition was down for what 5 days? Five days for 'maintenance? I lost my bet eh as I was certain you all were removing the comments section. But I was happy to lose that bet.
They probably did not pay
They probably did not pay their bills :P
Is arrest and release
Is arrest and release pending investigation a new law for police and soldiers, how come it's not cut tail on scene, arrest, cuttail in station and then cuttail in cell and taken to court late like ordinary civilians
This 'arrest and release'
This 'arrest and release' thing bothers me. It seems to happen only when law enforcement members are involved. By releasing these individuals, whether they are police or soldiers, you are enforcing the notion that they operate above and beyond the law.
He left the scene of an accident and also assaulted a police officer and for that he gets a 'hey be a good boy and come back later for us to discuss this some more'?
We, the reading public are powerless on here to do anything about this sort of behavior by our law enforcement agencies but the media has the power. I pray that the Guardian will follow up on these and other 'on-going investigations' of the police officers that were recently charged with criminal behavior (and even of the coast guard officer that caused the crash in which the young american tourist almost lost her arm) and keep senior officers on their toes and the public informed. Every chance you (the media) get please question the Police Commissioner and the head of the army about these investigations.
We depend on the media for so much more than just bringing the news to us. We need you to provide a system of checks on the govt as well. The media as watchdog, as guardian of the public interest, and as a conduit between governors and the governed, is what is needed in Trinidad and Tobago.

I was at the sceene of the
I was at the sceene of the incedent and witnessd the entire thing. The solider "slugged" the woman and she fell to the ground there were children there that witnessed this act.
This man is free as a bird just yesterday I saw him in full kit driving the same car( his personal vehicle) on the bus route.
The Woman Police that he attacked should take him to court for assault and he should be charged fo dangerous driving.
I hope that the Guardian follows up on this story.
