Kamla sees no hope for citizens

Published: 8 Sep 2009

MP for Siparia Kamla Persad-Bissessar has described the 2009/2010 budget as one of no hope. She said it was a regurgitation of what she described as the “same ole, same ole,” with the exception that the new four-tiered property tax regime would bring an increase in taxes for property owners.

She said: “It is a hopeless budget. It offers no hope. There is no hope for the most vulnerable. There is nothing for the elderly. No hope for children. No hope for the farmers except something about rangers. No hope for businessmen. No hope for the working and middle class. “What are they doing? They are penalising property owners. They are increasing property taxes.” Finance Minister Karen Tesheira said in the budget that legislation to give effect to a new property tax system would be brought to Parliament this year.

Nunez-Tesheira said technology would be used to assess all properties and collect property taxes in Trinidad and Tobago through a harmonised tax regime. She proposed that residential, commercial and agricultural properties would have a tax of three per cent, five per cent and one per cent respectively.

So is this statement Kamla.

So is this statement Kamla. Just like the budget, your statements are a rehash of older ones. Come on now, you can be more creative than this.

What do you expect her to

What do you expect her to say?
Nothing has changed with respect to the government's budgets - so how can you expect the Opposition's response to be any different? Why don't you condemn the government for their lack of "creativity" since their presentation was a "rehash" of older ones? When the government changes their "rehashed" budgeting policies only then can there be a reasonable expectation of a different response from Kamla.

Nothing has changed in the

Nothing has changed in the govt. budget, so that means the opposition had a year to reply to the same nonsense comming from the govt. yet we the people get garbage for both sides.

Lord, I hope Kamla didn't

Lord, I hope Kamla didn't wear the same purple lipstick she wore last year when she slammed the previous budget...That would would just be wrong...

I agree with her comments

I agree with her comments but Mrs Persad Bissesar has let us females down by not standing up for herself. I was of the opinion that she was an intelligent and hard working Minister in a questionable looking government.I opined that she was not a racial person. I thought that since she was educated and had family backing she would have had real backbone and would have had the strength to be her own person.

I was extremely disappointed to see that she let those old men push her into a corner at the last elections. This mental erosion began since the time Mr Ganga Singh made the embarassing joke about "pipe" for which he was not put in his place.

I still think that if she could step away from her racial counterparts ,she could represent the women of this country with dignity and finess .Then her comments could be appreciated with some validity.

Mrs Bisessar, please know that the women of this country have some respect for you . However, remember that you like Obama need to represent all of Trinidad ,not one race.
