?The road fatality figure continues to climb as two men lost their lives in separate accidents over the weekend. Statistics from the Police Traffic Branch recorded 183 deaths for the year to date. For the same period last year, the figure stood at 241. The victims have been identified as 49-year-old Nazoul Ali, of John Persad Trace, Freeport, and Paul Plaza, 42, of Hamilton Street, Old Bay Maracas.
Police said around 6.45 on Sunday afternoon, a white Nissan B15, driven by Harry, was heading east along the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway when on nearing Demerara Heights he proceeded to make a right turn. Simultaneously, Ali, who was riding a motorcycle, was proceeding in the opposite direction and collided with the rear of the car. Ali, who was flung from his cycle, was rushed to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope. However, he died from his injuries around 11.20 pm.
In the other incident, police said around 8.30 am on Sunday, a white three-tonne truck, driven by Sherwin Monsegue, of Never Dirty, Morvant, was driving along the Eastern Main Road, Guanapo, when he noticed a gold Nissan B15 "swerving" along the road. Monsegue told police he pulled to the extreme left side of the road. But the car driven by Plaza slammed head-on into the truck. He died on the spot. Police suspect Plaza may have fallen asleep at the wheel. (GK)
