Port-of-Spain Mayor Murchison Brown says garbage that accumulates in east Port-of-Spain should be disposed of daily. He made this comment at the corporation's statutory meeting at City Hall, Knox Street, Port-of-Spain, yesterday. Brown said he saw bins piled high with garbage when he toured areas like Gonzales, in Belmont, on Wednesday. "The garbage is not clearing daily. Around Belmont Junior Secondary and Belmont Secondary, the bin couldn't go back properly."
He said he also discussed regular garbage disposal with National Security Minister Martin Joseph and senior police officers. "I can't hear about tractors leaving the yard late and they have to be back by 3 pm. I told one man you have to be mad. You are not disposing of the garbage every day," he said. Brown said the beautification of the city has to continue. "People are calling into the radio and saying it was done for CHOGM (Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference). That is not so. It must be continued," he said. Meanwhile, Belmont councillor Peter John reminded the meeting that a lot of work was being done in east Port-of-Spain.
"There is power washing. Tamarind Square is lit. Columbus and Spree Simon look marvellous. Work is being done in Gandhi square. There is no stopping the work," he said. Brown also thanked both Local Government Minister Hazel Manning and Works Minister Colm Imbert for their assistance in paving roads. "They have been working assiduously...they have been paving around Park Street. They have been working to make the burgesses comfortable," he said.
