Information Minister Neil Parsanlal says the Caribbean New Media Group (CNMG) was awarded exclusive broadcast rights for live coverage of carinival 2010 after an open bid.
He said that in response to questions on the issue during yesterday's post-Cabinet news conference at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann's. Parsanlal said, however, in making the decision the Government had to consider another major factor. He said none of T&T's privately-owned television stations would have opted to broadcast live, in its entirety, the Panorama finals, which could take place from 9 am to 2 am the next day.
"It is simply not in your best interest as a commercial entity. The Government, howeve, has an obligation to the good citizens of T&T who put us there. And therefore we feel as part of our cultural output to the people of T&T that we must show it," he added. He said because of those factors the National Carinival Commission (NCC) selected CNMG as the preferred bidder. Parsanlal said all other news media are being allowed to provide news coverage of the Carinval events.
