Doctor can be police chief

A law­man with a doc­tor­ate in man­age­ment is now the front run­ner to be­come com­mis­sion­er of po­lice. Fifty five-year-old Dwayne Gibbs yes­ter­day be­came the top nom­i­nee af­ter the two top seed­ed ap­pli­cants were side­lined by Par­lia­ment. Gibbs, a su­per­in­ten­dent of po­lice at Al­ber­ta, Cana­da, holds a PhD in man­age­ment, with his doc­tor­al dis­ser­ta­tion be­ing in com­mu­ni­ty polic­ing.

He al­so holds a mas­ter's in busi­ness ad­min­is­tra­tion, a mas­ter's de­gree in so­ci­ol­o­gy and a bach­e­lor's de­gree in ed­u­ca­tion. He ob­tained his de­grees from the Uni­ver­si­ty of Al­ber­ta. Gibbs al­so has train­ing in in­dus­tri­al re­la­tions.

He has worked in traf­fic safe­ty and has lec­tured in or­gan­i­sa­tion­al stress to fam­i­lies of po­lice of­fi­cers. He has al­so done work in the com­bat and con­trol od or­gan­ised crime. Gibbs, who was born in Ed­mon­ton, Cana­da, is said to be a sports en­thu­si­ast, hav­ing par­tic­i­pat­ed in foot­ball, cy­cling, base­ball and run­ning re­lays.

He has three chil­dren.
