Prisoner escapes from Carrera

Published: 6 Jul 2010

A 41-year-old convict yesterday braved shark-infested waters to escape from the Carrera island prison and swam to the mainland. Up to late last night a manhunt was on for Andy Downy of Gasparillo. His fellow inmate, Trevor Hospedales, 37, of Fyzabad, who also made an attempt to escape, was captured near Pt Gourde around 1.45 pm. Officials said the distance from Carrera to Pt Gourde is about 800 metres.

Up to late last night, officers of the Western Division Task Force, Coast Guard and Prisons Service and Carenage Police combed the Chaguaramas and Carenage communities in search of Downy. The Special Anti-Crime Unit of Trinidad and Tobago helicopters were deployed over the northwestern peninsula while police set up roadblocks along the Western Main Road, Chaguaramas. Downy was sentenced to seven years’ jail after he was charged with breaking, entering and larceny. He was expected to be released in 2014. Hospedales was serving a five-year sentence.

In a telephone interview yesterday, Coast Guard public relations officer Lt Kirk Jean Baptiste said the Coast Guard was assisting prison officers. “Two men escaped and the Coast Guard retrieved one prisoner from the sea while the other escaped. There is a land effort because the prisoner reached land,” Baptiste added. She said a fast vessel interceptor and fast patrol car were being used.

Just for everyone’s

Just for everyone’s information. This comment "Shark infested" is absolutely erroneous those waters are not shark infested, a tall tale probably made up to keep prisoners from swimming the short distance to the main land. Anyone of them capable of swimming can do it.
So let us address the fact that the prison officers were not doing their jobs in keeping an eye on the prisoners
The prisoners are given freedom to fish off the jetty, I have witnessed this on many ocaasions. I have fished those waters and never caught any sharks in that area. Especially any that would be of any danger to humans. So let us stop saying this and get your facts straight reporters.
Dig deeper to findout if he was being supervised.

I quote this report.

I quote this report. "Seawell Gordon, an incorrigible voyeau sentenced to long term incarceration for that and other crimes, braved barracuda in escaping from the Carrera Island Prison, by swimming across the channel to Chaguaramas. That jailbreak resulted in the introduction of police dogs, the first, a canine christened "Bruno", immediately assigned to his pursuit."

This was HEADLINE NEWS approximately six decades ago, for those of us who can remember.

Sharks you say!! Has this

Sharks you say!! Has this article been condensed for publication on the web? If not then I am deeply concerned that it gives the public absolutely no information other than the names and crimes associated with the fugitives and is indeed just an update with no purpose whatsoever. This reporter should be more responsible. As one person commented there should've been way more facts included in the reports with regards to the fugitives' ages, description, date and time of escape and at least pictures of the people that have "escaped". I frequently fish, scuba dive and swim in the area immediately adjacent to Carrera island and since I could remember, the only danger to inhabitants of the prison island, that wish to flee, would be the current and the floating debris that is washed into the chaguaramus area after a rainshower. Maybe the coast guard vessels that proceed at extremely unsafe speeds for apparently no reason could also be considered a great risk. Then again who am I to comment I don't vote in a Marginal seat so my opiniion doesn't matter.

Is this why a Prisons

Is this why a Prisons officer was gunned down in Gasparillo this morning? I would say this was deliberate, this prisoner was allowed to escape and Prison officers paid off in the process.

"Officials said the distance

"Officials said the distance from Carrera to Pt Gourde is about 800 metres."

Hmmmm......why didn't someone realise he was swimming off and send the fast patrol after him. Don't think he has the lung capacity to swim 800m underwater! ONLY IN TRINIDAD.......LOL

That guy should be wanted

That guy should be wanted dead or alive, and a bounty should be placed on his head. I am certain, if this became the policy, when hunting criminals, there would less of them to search for.

Oh, by the way Dr Rowley, nice try with the CoP, was it a deliberate attempt to mislead the public, about the selection process? You had me believing that the UNC/PP somehow rejected the locals in favor of the outsiders, but the very capable Prime Minister, Ms Bissessar, brought an end to the confusion. The Police Commission, are the ones, who rejected the two locals at the head of the selection list, in favor the foreigners. I suppose those guys [Police Commission],are still suffering like you from a severe case of Manningitis.

I know the PNM's abstention from the whole selection process, is just a political strategy, just in case the guy turns out to be a square peg in a round hole, sort of like the PNM these days.

Don't forget Ladies and Gentlemen, we have local government coming up, and July 26th is the date. Therefore, organize, mobilize and get out there and vote.

Long live the UNC and the People's Partnership.

Forward ever, backward never.

Do Ma'at and live.

Asé!!

It's always hilarious when journalists write on topics they are not familiar with.

Anyone remember the jet-ski incident a few years ago?
"The vehicle was not fitted with brakes" LMBO (still)

LeMarquis, that shark story was a rouse created by the prison authorities long ago so they would not have to work so hard at guarding prisoners and interrupt their own sun tanning time.

IF IT WAS UP to Manning, all

IF IT WAS UP to Manning, all would escape and be roaming the streets to rob, rape, murder and kidnap some of the people.

For God's sake T&T

For God's sake T&T Police!

Where have your most basic policing skills gone?

The escaped Prisoner's photo should have been in all the major newspapers today.

The escapee is most likely still in the western peninsula today, and after "acquiring" some normal looking clothes and a hat, will be making his way out.... he could have easily be caught today with the assistance of a public that knew what he looked like!

I say, bring on the foreign COP now to get our lazy (ask Jack Warner) and incompetent policemen back to work.

Would've been nice, if the

Would've been nice, if the basic facts were straight on this matter, Lt Kirk Jean Baptiste is not a woman and there are no fast patrol car, only fast patrol crafts...Get it straight please...

This is a very short article

This is a very short article and for the life of me I cannot understand why would the reporter not get it right.

Lt. Kirk Jean Baptiste (pronounced Jah Batise, French) is indeed a man and a fast patrol car out at sea is only something that Sir Richard Branson or James Bond would have used. Neither of them live in Trinidad.

Are you sure that this is

Are you sure that this is the biggest crime/criminal for today? Are there no financiers/bankers ripping us off? C'mon, this kind of article perpetuates the stupidity that criminals belong to the lowest classes. We're bright now! We know that the elites are criminals. You whitewash their careers....but they serve satan!

I agree, A picture would be

I agree,

A picture would be much helpful in identifying this escaped convict.

The public needs to know the faces of all these criminals that are running around in T&T.We need to know if they are in jail, out on bond, or on the run.

We need to protect our family and ourselves from them.We also need to know if they are living next door to us or around the corner from us.

Its time for all the jails and courts to go "online" so that we can do our own "online searches" for pictures of all the criminals that are living in T&T and in our neighbourhoods in particular.

While we make fun of the

While we make fun of the "gaffs" by the reporter and editorial staff at the Guardian for not proofreading their article before having it go to print, we may be missing the serious "gaffs" by both the prison and police services on this issue.

I know we try to give those accused of crimes a fair chance before the court system, so we don't publish their photos in the media. But here we have a convicted criminal who has escaped. Wouldn't the wise thing be for these agencies to publish a photograph of this person in every TT newspaper this morning, so that the public could aid the law enforcement agencies in arresting this guy before he could do some more criminal acts? This is poor administration by the prison and police services. They could do far better.
