Pantins happy with award for Dennis

Jour­nal­ist Raoul Pan­tin, broth­er of late econ­o­mist Den­nis Pan­tin, says the fam­i­ly is hap­py he will be recog­nised for his con­tri­bu­tion to eco­nom­ic de­vel­op­ment.

The late Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies, St Au­gus­tine, lec­tur­er Pan­tin will posthu­mous­ly re­ceive the Hum­ming Bird Medal (Gold) for his con­tri­bu­tion in the sphere of na­tion­al de­vel­op­ment. Raoul Pan­tin, in an in­ter­view yes­ter­day said: "I am hap­py for the recog­ni­tion. We are still a bit griev­ed, as you know he was the youngest mem­ber of the fam­i­ly. I think he de­serves it. He was a hard­work­ing young man." Pan­tin suc­cumbed to can­cer of the bile duct at his home at Mara­cas, St Joseph, on Ju­ly 14. He was laid to rest at UWI, St Au­gus­tine, on his birth­day on Ju­ly 20.

Mc Far­lane gets Cha­co­nia gold

Artist/de­sign­er Bri­an Mac­Far­lane who re­ceived the Cha­co­nia Medal (Gold) in the sphere of Cul­ture said yes­ter­day: "I feel very hum­bled and ho­n­oured and ex­cit­ed and en­thused. I don't think it was all in vain. I just feel quite ho­n­oured and over­whelmed that peo­ple are ho­n­our­ing me. The arts are much alive in T&T. I am in a bit of shock. I will be ac­com­pa­nied by my broth­er Robert."

Sil­ver for a doc­tor

Med­ical doc­tor Zu­lai­ka Ali, who got the Cha­co­nia Medal (Sil­ver) in the sphere of med­i­cine said: "It's a nice feel­ing. It is not on­ly a re­flec­tion of my work, but all the peo­ple who have helped to fa­cil­i­tate the ac­com­plish­ment I have achieved over the years. "My hus­band Dr David Pi­cou (Aids re­searcher) is part of the group that I re­al­ly ap­pre­ci­ate and who has helped me along on this jour­ney. He has been my rock.

Pe­gus for fash­ion

Fash­ion de­sign­er Clau­dia Pe­gus, who re­ceived the Cha­co­nia Medal (Sil­ver) in the sphere of fash­ion, said: "I feel elat­ed. I feel hap­py. I feel as though I have won it for in­dus­try and not for my­self. I think it is a plus for the in­dus­try. I am work­ing on my dress...right now. As you guessed, the colour is red."

Ken­ny ho­n­oured

Prof Ju­lian Ken­ny–Cha­co­nia Medal (Gold)–for con­ser­va­tion of the en­vi­ron­ment, said: "The en­vi­ron­ment is an aw­ful mess. I'm 80. What can you say? I will con­tin­ue to try to see what we can do for the en­vi­ron­ment's pro­tec­tion."
