The University of the West Indies, St Augustine campus, expands to south Trinidad, says Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar as she listed the changes which the Government planned for the university. She said the south campus was expected to have programmes in technology and engineering to support the industrial heartland. She made the announcement on Thursday, while delivering the feature address at the matriculation and welcome ceremony held at the UWI's, St Augustine campus.
Another plan of expansion of the campus is expected in Tobago.
"The first of these is an integrated campus in Tobago, where UWI, Costaatt and UTT will partner together to have a campus located in Tobago," she said. At the St Augustine campus, a new bus service is expected to be provided which would service two routes. "We would have a service from San Fernando to bring students from South into 'the town,' St Augustine and one will come from (Sangre) Grande to bring students from the East," Persad-Bissessar said. A convocation hall was also expected to be constructed which can accommodate 4,000 students.
Referring to the enrolment into the Faculty of Law, Persad-Bissessar said it was the first time that 150 students registered to study in that field as previously there was an in take of 40 students. Regarding Haitian students, Persad-Bissessar noted that 53 students were part of the student population for the new academic year. Campus principal Professor Clement Sankat said there were plans to obtain accreditation regionally. "This report (accreditation report) will be a document that would guide us and continue to enhance our operations and build quality in the months ahead," he said.
